Title: Interesting auction purchase
Post by: Stoner creek on July 11, 2024, 09:47:57 PM
I just bought this one. It’s an antique but has had some careful restoration done. The barrel has been replaced (it’s a Getz) while keeping what appears to be the original hook breech, the lock is an L&R. Both have been given the rust box treatment and present themselves appropriately! You can see the other features of this piece which all appear to be original. I’m thinking that this piece might have originated from somewhere in New England. What say you experts?

Absolutely New England and a real beauty. Look up Silas Allen as this shares some features with his work. This is more highly embellished than 90% of New England rifles.

I cataloged that one 8 or 9 years ago. Its definitely a neat one. I also was very confident it was a New England gun, possibly by Silas Allen. It reminds me of the Allen in the MET:

I purchased this rifle from Poulin's auction in 2015 with the identical stock to the rifle posted. A few years later, the stock to the OP's rifle was in an auction which I did not bid on. It is a beautiful stock. These guns are of Worcester County, MA origin and could have been made by any of the master gunmakers. The photos are from Poulin's Auction.

Here's my Silas Allen signed for comparison.  The stock architecture is different, but I would not rule him out.  Most of the New Englands shared common engraving.
Yours is very nicely embelished.

Ole Silas sure wasn't stingy with wire. Nice group of rifles.

That is lovely and definitely provides some insight into Wayne's rifle.

Here is a link to my New England Rifle. No name on the barrel. It is in the Miller Library.
