Title: Underhammer chunker?
Post by: T.C.Albert on January 04, 2010, 09:21:15 PM
Is there any rule prohibiting "underhammer" action guns from shooting in chunk gun competitions?
Thanks,,

NMLRA Rule 5430, Chunk gun rifle:  the rifle may be either flint or percussion ignition, of either the traditional hunting or traditional target type, or as specified in the program , with no limit as to weight or caliber.   The rifle may not be equipped with a false muzzle.

And, rule 5420 requires open sights.

Underhammers strike me as being 'traditional.'

Quite traditional, and as early as any many early percussion locks...and genuine born in the USA technology to boot I think...
Thanks guys..

Lloyd........All of the guns are inspected before the match, as to conformity.  I'm not sure on that pistol grip.   I would send
a picture of this gun to Ron Borron and get his feelings on it.   It could save you a long trip for naught.........Don

TC,
There's plenty of underhammer rifles at the chunk matches, I shoot one and have several more. One I have is a Cecil Brookes that goes around 40 pounds. One heck of a rifle but it wears you out about half way through the match. Maybe I should bring the grandson to be the gun bearer?

Don,
I am not shooting that gun....  I made it and another very similar to it for a couple guys in Sandpoint to use on Idaho elk...  It shoots a bullet in a 1 in 22 barrel, not a round ball....

I have one i have shot for many years at the York shoot and Friendship. It has to be a H&A "style" action not the bench gun type "No" sealed igns. My gun has a pistol grip stock, but no thumb holes models. It has to be a metal buttplate, open, non adj. sights . And as said no false muzzles.
