I bought this early Continental lock. It’s very like an early Dutch lock a friend owned a dozen years ago except for the shape of the frizzen. His lock had a wider frizzen. Looked like a tulip. This lock like that one is big and heavy duty. Guessing 1690-1720.

I had to do a double take - I've got one that looks just like it, but with the wider frizzen face.
That's one heck of a sear spring there!

I would say that your lock has come off a large bore say a 4 bore wild fowling gun , I have just restored one which went out of the work shop 3 weeks ago with the same size lock , no bridle and a banana shape round face lock plate ,46 inch iron barrel which was foreign made but that was common for English built large bore guns of that period

I picked a lock up this summer that is very similar. I love these big early roundfaced locks!

To me the difference is that your lock is a repro to the one at the beginning of the thread no offence

Hi Rich,
Nice early lock! I love the placement of the rear lock bolt hole!! Here are two original continental locks that my Braintree Hill shop will be working on.

They are probably from mid-18th century and likely Dutch or German. The smaller one is for Allen Martin and will be used on one of his guns. The other is for Ken Gahagan and is also destined for a gun.

We will get them working like watches and sparking like mad without losing any historical details.

No offence taken. Just feel lucky to get a lock like this to build a gun around that has ready replacement parts.
