Title: October Online Shooting Match
Post by: okawbow on October 01, 2024, 03:12:55 PM
This will be a silhouette match. If you are reasonably young and healthy, shoot 5 shots from 50 yards offhand. Any shot with a half ball or better on the ram scores 10 points. Tie breaker is the closest shot to the eye. Post up to 5 targets.

Shooters age 65 or over or with health problems can shoot from any position as long as the firearm is not rested from 50 yards. Sitting, prone, or leaning against something is ok, but the gun can only be supported by the hands.

Shooters age 80 and over can shoot at 25 yards. Same rules as above.

http://www.mytargets.com/ram.pdf  Here is a link to the target. Good luck! Get out and shoot

Congratulations on the September match!
I like this target. Just printed one out. I'll have copies made for the other 4. That target will eat a lot of toner.

I’m printing some out now

So it is 5 shots at one ram target, not one shot at five different targets, correct?

Mike, that’s how I understand it

Wind finally dropped off.
50 yards standing. The shot calls I made were not this good ::). Someone was smiling on me.  54 Kibler Colonial. That shoots better than this BTW.
Plus I was using a brass suppository case (X2) found on the range as a charger since I left my adjustable measure at home and the two I had were too big for double and not enough for full… Like I said I was being smiled upon.

Cast up some balls for my match rifle. I figured same deal likely offhand, but we'll see how the back holds up. Damaged it unloading the truck from our summer at the lake.
Still need to take the boat apart. We're waiting for it to stop raining. I figure, if Providence smiles on me, I might do as well as Dan did.(but I doubt it) :-\

You should have heard my shot calls for this target. Not gonna tell you how many misses I called and they ALL went the the black. Some days you just can’t make a mistake I guess.

I always smile quietly to myself when I fire a shot on the trail that should have missed, but hits the steel anyway.  I think it speaks loudly that your form is excellent, and takes care of those sighting/firing timing mistakes.

You have to close your eyes when you shoot, Daryl, to keep from losing your retinas in the dirt when you touch off that cannon "Match Rifle".

Well, well. Hope this gives you guys incentive to get out and shoot this month's postal match.
Like I haven't shot for a year. Do have an injured rotator cuff, but that's no excuse for this dismal display.
.682" ball, 113gr. 2F Schutzen
10 ounce denim at .021"
sitting, shot off the hands
I score it a 30/50

Oh, OK. ;)
I'll use the .50 next attempt. V and post might be better on that target.
The .69's sights are just too close to the eyeballs now. I'll stick with that. LOL

You would think that with a target that size one could do better than this, but it is what it is.
I used my A. Verner copy .50 cal., 48" Getz barrel, 70 gr. GOEX 3Fg, .020" cotton denim patch lubed with Ballistol/water 1:~10.  Shot from sitting at 50 yards, rifle in my hands, no muzzle or forearm rest.  Good thing we're allowed five targets!  I score the first one 50/50 but of course, defer to the sponsor.
I had several targets like #2 with four good hits and then ruin  the target going for the head shot.  Next time.....

Here's my try at this match. This is my fourth try. I had 2 others with four in but missed the ram trying for a head shot. I shot this with a 40 cal Vincent replica with a 36 inch Green Mountain battel I just acquired. Load was 390 round ball, 30 gr of 3f Swiss, and 017 pillow ticking.

I tried it with my newest NW Trade gun. She's tuned in at 30 off the bag but never tried 50 until today........offhand non the less. I finally found my sight picture on the last shot....I think.
If I worried about missing I'd have to find a new hobby.😁
At least I'm on the board with a cool 10 for a score.
I'll give it a go again later this week.

My submissions not too good.
Target 1 4 shots on, no idea where 5th went.

??????? Hmm, it acts like picture loading but preview shows no picture. It was a 40, none near the eye, 5th shot not even on page.

Tried a second and got worse.

No picture here either. It was a 20, shot the willy, a low gut shot, 2 just below belly and one just below page.

It was breezy, enough so that I had to shield pan or it would blow out before frizzen could be closed. Shot sitting, elbows on bench, Jaeger .535 RB .018 patch, 70 gr. 2 Fg

Tried out my new bullet catcher backstop. My target doesn’t count, so I shot from a sitting position, unrested, 50 yards. (I’m over 70, so it’s ok🤠.) I just finished coning the muzzle of my .50 caliber Bedford percussion rifle. It doesn’t seem like it hurt the group size, but it now shoots a little high and right. I’ll have to re-do the sights before hunting season. I wasn’t trying to get that close to the eye, but it worked out.

One of those Fall days that was bright, and crisp!  Wonderful! My thanks to Marc again for spotting and the encouragement.  Thought I had gotten the ram's eye, but when I got home, I found that the paper was folded under rather than shot away. My backer cardboard needs replacing.  ;D Powder smoke lingered close to the ground this morning and we had a lot of fun.
J.B.

Age 81.
25 yards rested in hands. 42" x 7/8" Rice barrel, .40 SMR. 55 gr. GOEX FFFG, .390 ball, .015 canvas patch. Garmin says MV 2150fps.

Had our first sprinkle of snow on the ground this morning. It's still there, meaning it's still freezing.
Made me think of hunting/shooting, when I dragged the garbage can out to the curb this morning.
Still -2 at 10:15. 0 is freezing.

Great shooting. I am off the hook.

Daryl, we missed snow on the ground by a few hundred feet elevation the other night. We are about 4400+here and it must have been about 4700.

My daughter's "diggins" in Dawson Creek, B.C. got 6 inches of snow a couple days ago & I see Justin got about 4".
The skiff we got yesterday, is still there in our back yard & it's colder today, about -5.

Can you tell us more about your backstop?  If you posted about it before, do you have a link?

I have some land I can hunt, but it is quite open, and I need to build some sort of small range on it for shooting when I go down there.  I want to be safe so I don't scare the neighbors.

I use a simple 3/8” steel plate in a wooden frame. The plate is angled at 45 degrees. The lead balls are diverted down into sand or dirt, and can be recovered and melted back down again.

I appreciate the tip.

I am thinking three foot square?  Is that big enough for a 50 yard range?  Of course, that depends on how bad a shot I am, I guess.  Now I need to find a source for steel plate.
Title: Re: October Online Shooting Match

This is one I made for air gun shooting indoors. It is 19" x 18". Seems to me the 3/16" steel plate was 20" square.
A larger size could easily be made for shooting muzzleloaders with thicker steel, of course.
This one handled a .45 cal air rife just fine as well as 1,100fps with a .25 cal. air rifle.
A simple angled sheet of steel of steel held in a frame would work fine for outdoor shooting.
Mine is  box as I needed to collect the fragments. The sheet steel sits on a piece of angle iron, to prevent damaging the floor.
I staple cardboard to the front of the frame then hand targets from the clamps.
My hope is that this gives ideas to you.

I like to participate in all our online matches. I had an opportunity to shoot this one yesterday at a friends farm in Southern i
Illinois.
I shot one target to figure out where to hold. The head is too irregular to pick a spot on. The direction of the light had me needing to hold a bit to the left.
At any rate I was using my .40 Getz barreled squirrel rifle. 50 grains of3f Goex. .395 ball .024 canvas with bear lube.
I shot two targets for score.
I tried to emasculate the one on the left with my first shot. I went outside the black on my 2nd shot on the target on the right.
The wind was variable but not too strong.
I shot the target offhand standing at 50 yards.
