Title: Interesting European SxS
Post by: TommyG on October 03, 2024, 07:06:26 PM
A friend dropped this off, has been in his family for 5 generations.  I am curious if any of you are familiar with this maker, or arms from this region.  From what I can tell on the locks and the silver on the barrel, the maker is "A Schtofser", the town "IN Furstenau".
What is really confusing is there is a "Furstenau" in both Saxony region of Germany, and also in Switzerland.
It appears to be a .62 cal smooth, 32" barrels.  Thanks for any help.  TommyG

The "f" in the name is actually "eszett" or "scharfes S", and the name is "A. Schlosser" for August Schlosser of Fursenau, Baden, (now in the southern part of Germany). He is listed in some sources as active around 1740-1770, but the guns I've seen with his marking are all percussion guns dating to 1830s-1850s.
