Title: The brother rifles
Post by: bama on October 13, 2024, 04:41:49 AM
Here is a pair of rifles that I just finished up. I built these for two brothers that hunt the flintlock lock season in Pennsylvania. One is a Lancaster style and the other is a Virginia styled rifle. Both have FCI barrels, Chambers locks, Harrison gun stock blanks and iron hardware. Both rifles have simple pinned triggers and the barrels are held by wedges instead of being pinned. The stain is nitric acid and the finish is a mixture of shellac and boiled linseed oil, hand rubbed, the furniture has been browned.

Beautiful rifles Jim. Exceptional wood on both of them. I like the fact that there are no patch boxes to detract from the wood.

The rifles are outstanding, as usual.

Can you tell us how you mixed the shellac with the BLO?  Or was it two layers?

Thanks everyone. I have had the honor of building a couple of sets of rifles for family, my next project is another pair of rifles for brothers.

The shellac will mix with the BLO. I use a 50/50 mix. If the mixture dries too fast, add a little more BLO. If it dries too slow, add a little more shellac. I mix up a batch in a jelly jar and it will last for a long time. Just shake it up good before you it if it has been sitting awhile. The mixture will separate if it sets for a while.
