Here is a little Tennessee squirrel rifle I'm finishing up. It has an unknown .32 barrel in a curly ash stock. I used a Kibler lock on this rifle and really like it. After building this one I'm not sure I'll make another one with ash. It looks great but it is tough to work with.

Beautiful rifle and craftmanship!

I knew a ship caulker who was a full blood Mikmack from prince Edward Island. He drove his family south and ran out of gas on the New London (CT) bridge and said "here we are." Basil caulked mine sweepers (wooden hulls) through ww2 and eventually retired to Mystic Seaport Museum. He told me to never make hammer handles out of hickory but ,instead, use ash/ Hickory will be cold in your hand and will cause problems when you're old but ash is kind in cold weather.

That's one beautiful mountain rifle. The colors would make it blend right in to the forest.

Thanks all for the kind words.

Love the figuring on that guy! Your persistence paid off. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
-
Beautifully rifle Brian, my hats off to you for even thinking of using ash. I love the finished product but always backed away from starting a rifle with a ash stock!

I guess Ash is going the way of the dinosaurs…. Brian did a heck of a good job with it!
-
Whatever time you spent on that ash was well worth it.

Very nicely done (as usual) Brian, love the color. What steps did you take in coloring?

Brian,
I'm not sure how I missed this rifle until now. It's a beaut, for sure. I have an ash stock with a barrel in it waiting on me to get started. What did you use for staining and finishing this rifle. I agree, it looks great!

Ron, I used Kibler's iron nitrate stain and Pilkington stock oil. I think I used some soot in one or two of the coats of oil.
-
Brian,
Where did you manage to find Pilkingtons oil? I thought they were out of business. I have a small bottle of it but it's basically for rejuvenating a stock but I sometimes rub it on at the end.
-
Very sweet rifle.
-
I bought a couple of bottles from Brownell's back during the covid years. I didn't know that they were out of business now. I really like their oil.
-
Excellent rifle Brian but I think you better send it to me. I'll check it for accuracy... Ha ha..I promise I'll send it back...Just don't be in a hurry...lol
-
Your warm finishes make that ash beautiful. I really like that one Brian. Feel free to leave it here with me. JB and I will use it in the monthly ALR target matches. :-) God Bless, Marc
