Hi, I just replied to a gentleman's thread in the gun building forum, but noticed he hasn't been on here since May so I thought I'd ask here, which may be a more appropriate spot.
I ran across a post on another forum a couple days ago where a guy was saying that there's obvious building characteristics of early Hawken rifles that were built by Jacob Hawken and not Samuel.
He posted this picture below, which he said came from an old Hawken Shop brochure. He gave me permission to post here to ask about it.
Does anyone have more information on St Louis J Hawken rifles? Searching the web only brings up J S Hawken rifles.

I don’t recall seeing any signed just J Hawken. He got to St. Louis before Sam but I’m not sure any “solo” rifles are well documented.

The trigger guard says Hawken but the rest could be anything from a very wide group of builders.

It would be interesting to see the barrel marking. The rifle is out there someplace. I seem to remember seeing this picture ::) in a book but danged if I know where to look..

The first time I seen the photo of this rifle was in one of Art Russel's catalogs when he started his Hawken Shop. I have a full-size drawing that I purchased in the arch museum in St. Louis years ago. I have been planning on building a similar rifle since that time, but have not had time to get the work done. I never contacted Art to try and get more info on the rifle. It is a unique rifle.
