Here I have a percussion Rifle stamped J Hayden Oxford Ohio. It is stocked in curly maple, which is very solid with the original finish in nice "attic" condition. There is a tight crack on left forearm, between nose cap and wedge. The original brass hardware has a nice mustard patina. The plates around the wedge look to be a later addition and are of poured pewter. The wedge is wood and a later addition also. The poured pewter nose cap looks original. It has an engraved "hardware" store lock and set trigger, both in nice working condition. It appears the main spring has been replaced and the "smith" ground the lock face down when fitting it. The hammer is slightly loose on the tumbler. The barrel is fitted with the more expensive bolster type breech and of approx. 32-33 cal. and has a bulge, approx. 9 inches from the muzzle, it is slightly swamped, measuring approx. .940-.920-940. You will want to replace the RR if you plan on shooting it. Plenty of meat left to bore to a larger caliber. $595 NOW $450 plus shipping and ins. I have been getting some pretty good prices from Pirate Ship, send me your zip and I will get you a quote.

do the triggers set and function? does the lock work? does the lock have a half cock notch?
-
Yes, the set trigger works perfectly, and the lock works perfectly with a strong main spring. The lock does not have a half cock notch as a lot of them didn't. I have another J Hayden that I had rebored and rifled to .40 gain twist by Bobby Hoyt and it doesn't have a half cock notch. I have taken many squirrels and won many matches with it though. My plans were to send this one to Bobby too, but I need to move a few items. Thanks, LK

This could be the actual gun shop for Mr. J Hayden??
Just a bit of history of him or maybe a relative??

Ole442, Thats interesting, I was not aware that his shop still existed. He also has a son named Joseph. Thanks, Ed

i have concerns about the bulge in the barrel is it safe?
-
That bulge was made by an obstruction in the barrel. It wouldn't bother me at all to shoot this gun as is or bore it till the bore is smooth, rifle it and shoot away. Pressures that far up the barrel are pretty low and as long as no obstructions are encountered it will be ok....LK

Reduced to $450 plus shipping, Thanks, LK

Great price on a nice OHIO rifle!!!!!

You could have Bobby line it & the bulge issue goes away.
