Title: What ever happened to Conrad Welshans Long rifle - Kindig #148
Post by: gerlachdave on February 26, 2025, 03:21:22 PM
I am curious if the whereabouts of Conrad Welshans Long rifle - Kindig #148 is today?

I am his 5th great grandson and am building a replica (better described as a display/discussion piece) using the Traditions 50 cal Long rifle. Doing this more for the family connection and genealogy, but I love history. Having fun on the carving and will soon get to engraving the patchbox.

Are there additional images out there besides Kindig’s black and white and the one I found on this site last night - the one on the top right (attached).

Not sure of the Kindig gun, but there is a possible Welshans on LaMaster Arms. Not a bad price for a carved and engraved gun either…

The Welshans rifle #148 is in the book I wrote with Joe Kindig III - MASTERPIECES OF THE AMERICAN LONG RIFLE ...the Joe Kindig Jr. Collection. Eastwind Publishing.
It is on pages 52-53, four - 4 color photos.

You can find used copies online. You are looking at a couple of hundred bucks. I've been stalking this book for a while.

Is the rifle signed?  Seems I recall some doubting this was a Welshman's rifle.  I may not be remembering correctly, though.

According to Kindig’s work. It was signed. See attached page:

Dear Patrick,
Seeing that the book is very hard to find, would the four pictures be available or available to purchase?

Dave,
The Kentucky Rifle Foundation has a limited number of the Kindig books for sale at $50.00 plus shipping. We also have detailed photos of a number of Welshans rifles in the Wes White Central PA flash drive (Issue 23) and one in the York/Adams flash drive (Issue 10). Ordering info is on our website, kentuckyriflefoundation.org (http://kentuckyriflefoundation.org). The book is not currently listed on the website but you can fill out the order form and note that you want the Kindig book (and any flash drives) and mail it, with your check, to the address on the form.

I own the Kindig book which has the black and white 3 photos. The color shot found on this site is much more clear in understanding the lines.

Dave, I thought you were looking for the book, Masterpieces of the American Longrifle-The Joe Kindig Jr. Collection that Patrick co-wrote with Joe Kindig III. That's the one I was referring to.
