Title: Wheellock 2 Rife Choices
Post by: Adrie luke on April 05, 2025, 04:14:37 PM
Hello

The weather is a bit better.
I started making the second wheellock.
The first wheellock was quite a challenge.
Hopefully this one will be a bit better.

Greetings Adrie

Very nicely done, Adrie!!!  It is hard enough to create a full size lock, not to mention a wheellock.  I can't imagine how tedious it is building a miniature!  Thanks for sharing.

Seems like you just get better and better, Adrie.  Going to be a great shooter.

What period were these wheel locks popular?  Late 1600's - early 1700's?

The castle is from 1670- 1680.

I only have a picture of the front.
Luckily I found another picture of an inside.

Clean looking work. I have built lots of flints, percussions, a few cannon and one wheel lock. I am interested in building more wheel locks.

Amazing, the abilities of gunmakers back in the 17th Century.  The "innards" are so skillfully done that it almost appears computer controlled.  Not being sarcastic, just awed at the complexity and skilled workmanship.

You would have fitted in very well with them, Adrie!

The engraving was hard to see.
Very large printed drawn and again printed small.

The engraving  is a lot and small.

Years ago I made a Wheellock carabin and a pistol from scrath in full size. And I remember it was not easy, so Adrie you are a master gunsmith!

This time I went to practice.
My wife says it's a shame otherwise it would have been there already.
That's true.

Adrie, do you put serrations on the wheel or do you leave it smooth where it rubs the flint?

I have thought long about engraving.
You don't see the wheel then I shouldn't engrave it, you see that often.
Then it will be like this

It will be lovely, Adrie.  Taylor made 2 wheels for his matchlock, one smooth for flint and one serrated for iron pyrites.

Your engraving turned out fine. How are you going to finish the lock plate?

Hello
The lock is ready but it sparked a few times.
I had drilled a hole too deep in the wheel
to solve it I filled the hole with silver solder
that works, but because of that the wheel became soft
I will solve it but there is more in the world than making a lock.

Thanks everyone

Adrie

I would not attempt it even if I knew what I was doing.High art in the grand manor of old Europe for sure.If you wanted to make a gun with this lock, what are regulations where you live and can black powder be bought to use in it? Thank you for showing such fine workmanship.

Bob

If you are a member of a shooting club, you can eventually buy your own rifle, pistol and also black powder.
I am not a shooter myself, although

I built a wheel lock from a set of Rifle Shoppe castings last year. That was enough for me. Nice work. Kudos to you.

Back in 1989 at the World Police and Fire Games in B.C., only the Police Chief of the Netherlands Rifle Team owned a center-fire rifle. Too arduous & expensive were the requirements to qualify,  although all of them owned match quality .22 LR rifles.

The gun is an air rifle.

I wanted to make the cock spring stronger that worked but when I
put the cock back it broke the rear lip was too big
made it smaller and a new spring.
Made a new wheel a bit bigger and a bit thicker
and a smooth and a serrated.
Made the mainsprig a bit stronger now it sparks but it was a lot of work
now but the hands heal.
and luckily I still had a barrel lying around that I had made.
make this one swamped.

Hello

I made this wheellock because the wheel and spring are hidden.
On the internet I saw a nicer rifle, also because the stock has more drop.
Only the lock does not seem to be in line with the stock.
The barrel is swamped and with rifling.
Now find a nice piece of walnut wood
