Title: Kentucky opening morning
Post by: Austin on April 12, 2025, 05:03:08 PM
My youngest son lined up 2 jakes with a Wayne Estes 54 smoothie. One shot and done!

OK, I'm jealous. Congratulations to your son. Turkey season opens here the 15th but we no longer hunt them. The few I did take were all shot with vintage shotguns and black powder.

Keep the wind in your face, your back to the sun and your powder dry.

I know exactly where he took those 2 birds. I’ve shot a couple of deer from the same spot. Happy Hunting Grounds!!

In 54’s we use 70 grains 2F, an over powder card, a 28 gauge plastic shot cup that holds 70 grains of #9 TSS (by volume),an over shot card, then a olive oil soaked 1/2 inch thick fiber wad over the top…. Kind of a modified sky chief. Deadly at 30 yards. I get the TSS shot cups from ballistic products inc.

Wonderful pictures Austin!

Congrats to your son!
I have been thinking about TSS, as it is so dense.

Can you tell me what the 70gr volume of TSS actually weighs?

Thanks you again for the pictures!

Sorry, we aren’t that scientific down here on Stoner Creek 😂
I do know that it’s roughly 20% heavier than lead. For us, the plastic shot cups and TSS shot was a game changer for effective hunting/clean kills with cylinder bore muzzle loaders. If you’re worried about your barrel, there is a copper coated TSS available also.
