Title: Tennessee turkey opening
Post by: okawbow on April 12, 2025, 11:43:32 PM
Sat till 1:45 today without seeing anything and gobblers sounded far away. Made a few clucks and purrs with my homemade box call and saw a couple hens heading my way. Was watching the hens scratching around when another turkey caught my eye. This beautiful gobbler stuck his head up at about 30 yards and received a load of #6’s from my home made flintlock. Had a 9 1/2” beard and 1 1/8” spurs. Weighed about 20#. West Tennessee on my 12acre woods.

This morning was the opening day here in western SD too.  I got this bird about 8 am.  I have killed 7 turkeys with this gun using the loads mentioned at https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=76466.msg759338#msg759338 and using #6 shot.  Today I tried 1 1/8 ounce of # 7 1/2.  At 15 yards there was enough energy to flatten the bird, and a partial dissection of the neck revealed at least one neck vertebrae shattered.  Gun has no choke but I use a plastic wad that is only partially slit.  This seems to improve pattern density.

Nice bird!
I tried a shot with 9 1/2 TSS shot a friend gave me. Made a dense pattern at 30 yards. Supposed to be very effective because it is much more dense than lead.
