Title: Colonial rifle I just finished (added a few pictures)
Post by: Brian Jordan on April 14, 2025, 03:30:25 AM
I enjoyed assembling this kit. I added Davis #4 set triggers. First time engraving on real gun parts ;D. I know it's simple engraving in comparison to some of the work on here , but I'm happy with how it turned out. I also built a damp box based on Bivens design for rusting the metal parts, It worked pretty well.

Thanks for looking.

Carving is cleanly executed. I’d like to see the cheekpiece side, too.

Good job on the engravings Brian, you did good for the first one! I know how challenging that can be!
Great looking gun!!

Nice work on the overall finish. I’d try for some curves in your nice engraving to mirror your excellent carving.
Cheers Richard

Nice lines on that side plate. It’s not easy to get those nice even thin lines…thumbs up!
Cheers Richard

That rifle will look better and better, after it's been handled and shot a bunch.

Some people dont like " dark " rifles but I DO.   ;) Did you have any special  problems installing double triggers?

Thanks everyone!

Smylee, the set triggers were really not a problem. You basically have to glue a piece of maple in the trigger plate inlet and inlet the triggers in like you would in a blank build. The set trigger does need a little heating and bending, and the guard needs modified a little as well.

Very nice gun. I particularly like the look of the carving in the whole cheek piece area.

I like the dark wood as well, Brian. If I might make a suggestion, have a gander at Joe R's muzzle treatment.
If I were you, I'd emulate that using the end of my thumb, some emery or wet/dry paper. It will only take a
minute or so to spruce up your crown.
