Title: May ALR Postal Shoot
Post by: Marcruger on May 02, 2025, 04:43:44 AM
Well, I sure did not think I'd be winning this month.  As JB said last month, even a blind hog can find an acorn every so often.

In continuing the turkey hunting theme, here's a related but different target.  A turkey!   If you are tired of turkey targets, you are free to call this red animal a bison if you like.    ;)   The following link should take you to the May gobbler:

https://media.mwstatic.com/pdf/downloads/target-turkey.pdf

It looks like the image below.

Offhand shot at 25 yards.  All other positions are shot at 50 yards.  Your choice.

Five shots per target and up to four targets may be submitted. To score a shot must be inside the red part of the bird.   The scoring rings are 10, 9 (grey ring), 8, 7, then any part of the red lower body is a six.  Max score of 50. Again, half-ball rule on all shots. Tie breaker will be group size.  Remember - a good cardboard target backer and heavier weight of target paper sure helps.

Hey, hey, hey.   Let's be careful out there.

Good shooting and God Bless,    Marc

The thin part of the head above the ring is zero, or also a 6?

Good point Foresterdj.  I say let's call it zero.  It would be hard to get a 1/2 ball into that sliver unless the ball is very small.  Not worth messing with.  Thank you for asking.  God Bless,   Marc

Thank you Tony.  I was beginning to think my target selection had offended everyone.  Best of luck with your shooting.    Marc

Had no chance at a real turkey this spring, so went to the range to fire off my load of #5 shot, then took 5 off hand with round ball at the target of the month.

(FYI, Turkey load was 70 gr FFg a nitro card, 1.75 oz #5 and over shot card, at 25 yards.)

My off hand with the round ball not very good, luckily I have more chances. It was raining though I was under a roof. Load was 70 gr FFg, nitro card, loose .610 RB and over shot to hold it in.

The turkey was quite safe, as long as he stood still.

Nothing wrong with your choice of targets, just lots of rain!😳

Foresterdj, Do you see that roundball target as an 8?   That is how I am seeing it.  The up side is that you are in the lead!    ;D

I call it a zero. The ball below the beak in the 8 ring is a miss, certainly not a half ball on red. I will get out again, though the month is going by fast.

If no one else enters, would a zero win? Please guys, let us not let that happen.

Actually, that ball is perfectly centered on that wattle or whatever that droopy thingy is.

I think that’s called a snood.

8 I guess then. Though not a kill shot.

Daryl's birthday today...yeeha!!  Made it to the range and shot three targets before the skeeters and muggyness got to us.  Here's my best target today...I score it 40/50, but naturally, defer to the host for the final word.

25 yards offhand (totally unsupported)  Chambers' Virginia rifle in .60 cal, 86 gr. FFg GOEX, .022" cotton denim patch, .590" pure lead ball.  4Fg pan powder.  I found it a difficult target to see the ten ring.

Thanks buddy. You'd think Taylor would take it easy on me today?
Not a chance.  I got a 16 - LOL.
We won't discuss the other patterns.
Maybe  should shoot it more than once a year?

Taylor, that's a beauty! Wish I could get to the range, but that's not to be until this knee is fully healed.

Hey Guys,

Great to see your targets.   I hope more folks get out there for the holiday weekend.

So far the leader board looks like this:

Taylor with a 40
Daryl with a 16
and Foresterdj hanging in there with an 8

With three targets posted, everyone ends up on the podium.   So far.....

God Bless,   Marc

Finally got to shoot after having the plague. Homemade.30 caliber, Burton barrel, L&R lock. .30 ball, 30 grains 3F. Denim patch, moose milk. 25 yards offhand. Kind of hard to see where to shoot the target with a black and white print. I believe this little rifle would shoot into 1 hole at 25 yards if I could hold steady.

Glad you are feeling better Okawbow.

I read your top target as a 38, and the lower one as a 40.  Any disagreements?

Keep it going guys.  We have a few more days left.

God Bless,  Marc

Newfoundland is quite interesting. Saw these white caribou today down in the South of the Irish Loop.

Here are three targets from today.  All were shot offhand unsupported at 25 yds. These were shot through the right rifled barrel of my German Miedl cape gun and the load info is on each of the targets.

I started pretty rough and then got settled down for the third target. I just acquired 10 cans of Goex FFg with a span of date codes from 1989 to 2005 and the shooting today was done from a 1989 can. Fair testament to longevity of BPs.

As mentioned I also had some trouble focusing on the ‘bull’. Anyway, a fun target to shoot, Marc.

Hi Dennis,   Thank you for sending in the targets.   I am going to give my opinion on the scoring, and I am interested to hear if you agree.

#1 - I'd call this a 34, maybe a 35

#2 - I'd call this a 9

#3 - I'd call this a 28.  I don't think there is enough ball on the bird to include that extra 9 that is second from left.

Taylor and Okawbow are in the lead with 40 each.

I heard a rumor that Daryl in planning to shoot an extra target this month with a 4-bore.  ;-)

Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

#1 looks to me like 2 9s and 2 8s for a 34.

My second try, Dorothy the .54 jaeger, Douglas barrel wide land narrow groove 1:45 twist; 70 gr FFg, .018 patch with dilute dawn soap and water lube, .535 RB, 50 yards, sand bag rest, avg MV = 1261.1 fps (Playing with new Garmin chrono). A 26 I think.

My third try, Evelyne the .54 jaeger, Moody barrel narrow lands wide grooves 1:33 twist; 70 gr FFg, .018 patch, lubed as above, .535 RB, 50 yards, sand bag rest, avg MV = 1254.3 fps. A 19 or 20 I think.

No time this month for a 4th target.

Was down with some sort of plague for a couple of weeks, and then rain settled in.
Was able to get 2 targets shot over the last couple of days...wished it was more , but 2 will have to do.  25 yards, off hand, .62 smoothbore, 80 gr FFg , bare .610 pure lead ball, followed by a wad of wasp nest

foresterdj,  I agree, your best target appears to be a 26.  Bob, I think your best is a 28, but it is very hard to read online.

Overall, I am going to call to call okawbow the winner this month with a 40.  Four shots completely inside the ten ring, and a zero close by.

Taylor, no offense meant at all to your shooting.   That is a fine target also reading 40.  I read your target as three solid tens, a half-ball ten, and a zero just outside.

I really hate scoring when it is so close.

God Bless,    Marc

Well, I didn’t really expect to win this one. Wish we could do a shoot off, Taylor. You should have shot against me today at my monthly club shoot. I managed to win, but had 1 shot completely off the scoring rings because of a slow fire. For June, we can go back to a regular ring target.
