Title: Lock ID needed
Post by: bama on July 18, 2025, 10:54:38 PM
Can anyone ID where or who made this lock. It is on a southern mountain rifle. I don’t think it is original to the gun.

Jim, I got one with the old tag still intact that is new ? old. Color case colors. Tag reads J.B. Harison of Ohio 1856  25cents. This came out of the old Wm. H. Vietor gunshop . He has been gone since 1968.  Born in 1883. Hope this helps.

To support the above comment, I've seen this lock most often on Ohio rifles here in the Midwest, although like anything else, they also got around.

I had an iron-mounted mountain rifle with one of those locks. Someone posted a rifle with the same lock on here a few years ago.

My maternal grandfather bought a general store in 1898 and there was a barrel of locks similar to this one and priced at 25 cents each and
he said none of them sold and were still there when he sold the store. Can you show the inside of this lock?
