I’m collecting things I need to build my second rifle from a plank. I’m a glutton for punishment. I’m going to build a German Jaeger rifle. Is there another, more simple, type of buttplate that would be suitable? I’m not ready to inlet the typical super fancy, engraved, jaeger rifle plate. I can handle the rest of the fancy pieces.

One approach is to build a jaeger in much the sense as one would build a “longrifle” with no apparent affiliation with specific originals. Another approach is to find an original that appeals to you and model your build after that gun. Thank you, Rich. I like that example. The butt plate, thimbles, side plate and trigger guard are something I can handle inletting. Very American long rifle in appearance other than the short drop, short barrel and chunky butt stock. That is basically what I’m after. I’m a deer hunter who just likes keeping my hands busy. I’m generally not into HC’ness, but I do want to follow the basic Germanic path for this rifle. Kind of a homage to my heritage. Appreciate your feedback.

Yes, I like that one too. This one was owned by a relative in the Mohawk Valley of NY. Second cousin much removed. Side plate is a bit fancy but it’s a short gun with nice architecture. https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=19911.0
