I have dissolved some ferric nitrate in alcohol. When I apply it to my stock, it turns grey, and it is still grey after heating it. Any ideas?

I’d guess it’s not getting hot enough it is too concentrated. Did you let it dry overnight before heating? At least 4 hours?

Thank You, Rich.

Is that the recommended method of doing it? if so, I will need to give it a try.
I tend to let the water-based ferric nitrate dry for about thirty minutes or less before blushing, and sometimes hurry it along with a little heat. Blushing seems fine, but I now wonder if letting it sit longer might intensify the result. Think I feel an experiment coming on ;D

That’s just how I was taught, to let it dry naturally.

I use Kiblers version. The longer it sits the darker it gets, to a point of course. I experimented last week. I supplement the color with dye if need be.
