Enclosed are  images of a not often seen  rare English fowling gun showing  English gun making at its best.

My guess is a tube lock.
Detonating compound
5:1:1
5 parts potassium chlorate
1 part sulphur
1 part charcoal

I suspected it was a tube lock.  Remarkable that it survived without being reworked to use caps.

That is a really beautiful gun. I'm particularly fond of tube locks, mostly because you see so few of them. I agree with Feltwad that it's unlikely any were imported during their period of use but there were some American made examples, none of which can hold a candle to the quality of British work.

I believe you have a live pigeon tubelock as well, By North, of Southhampton?
I have a barrel by the same maker.
North doesn't sound right but going by memory!
Tubelocks were favoured for big guns and live pigeon shooting, because of their  very sure ignition.
This one you show us is a very best. Beautiful work!

Hi Pukka  There were two Southampton  makers of  Tube lock guns one was John Cox and the other was Alfred Clayton see images

Thanks for sharing these pictures, Feltwad. They are beautiful guns and the clearest pictures of the tube locks that I have ever seen.
