Title: Good solution for drying stocks.
Post by: Justin Urbantas on August 19, 2025, 07:08:03 PM
Here's a good way to hang stocks to dry, so you can handle them easily and hang them out of the way. Just an eye hook into the buttplate screw hole.

that will work.  I hang mine from the nose cap using the front pin hole for the barrel pin or RR pipe pin
at the muzzle. I always start at the buttstock applying finish & I work myself towards the
nosecap. Have a couple special lil copper wires I use & I always hang them in same corner
as I know to stay out of it. Haven't knocked one off there yet, but have come close several
times. Now I know it is best just stay clear of that corner.

I use Brownell's stock cradle, once you put the stock in there, there  is no need to remove it until the stock is done, you can make one very easy.

John, question if i might, is the stock suspended in the "cradle" by pins or hooks in the ends, both butt and forend?

I always dry the finishes (no matter what they are) in the sun.  The UV is a HUGE help in curing the finish.  To avoid having to manually turn the stock from side to side and edge to edge, I made this out of a cheap 110VAC very low RPM motor.  I just hang the stock in the sun and let the motor slowly turn it around......

That's a great idea.

Where do you buy a motor like that?

I've been using Tried and True, and the cure times are very slow.  I think this might speed it up a little.

Here is an eBay offering of this geared motor or timer, I believe.

Yes. That’s it. Any 120 VAC clock motor will work. And actually, the pictures I posted here are the “throw something together in less than 5 minutes” version. I have cleaned it up quite a bit and I’ll post a picture of the updated version when I get back home.

I hang stocks, grips and forends from bent wires cut from coat hangers.
Sometimes the hook-eye is used when there's no secure place to hook up the stock with the bent wire.
They hang from everything from a the top of a closet door molding (the door is propped open all the time) to shelves, to about any place that seems appropriate in here.

Enough stuff going on all the time so I forget about them individually, kind of. They all dry just fine.

Never be in a hurry for stock finish to dry.

Daryl here is a  picture of my stock cradle,my Dad bought this thing from Brownell's way back when. its meant for checkering and finishing. Clamp it it your vise or to a table and your set. I bet most of have all they need to make this thing laying around at home. Three pcs 2x4, 3  long bolts. I use a dummy barrel to stiffen my stock.
