One of my good blackpowder friends here, keeps doing me favours and is impossible to pay back in a meaningful manner.
He primarily shoots a french tradegun, so now that I've had some success in making my own bag, I figured I'd make him a new bag as a way of partly paying back.
Problem is , that I have zero idea of what style would be appropriate? I'm looking for typical bags used by fur traders in Canada, ideally out west, but I don't think he's that picky.
Any leads would be much appreciated.

A good heart with admirable intent. I've been writing a bunch of Every Man A Cobbler posts because I am too lazy to get published again, and there are a lot of techniques in there aimed at guys who don't make bags for a living.
The key word here is..."sometimes"...
Sometimes bags have a big flap, and sometimes they don't. Sometimes bags are large and roomy and sometimes they are not.
Follow your instincts and judgement. Leather bags are really hard to date because leather is a perishable, and the drawings of the period were subject to artists whimsy.
I'd try for a kit. I've been using stuff from Crazy Crow and you can fashion a nice looking rig from their stuff, but is not your only alternative.
Just be sure to avoid using modern materials such as plastic beads or shiny buckles.
Think about what your friend uses and values, and bend your creation towards that.
Go get 'em.

Yeah, that was a little bit what I was afraid of.
I do have the "Recreating the 18th century Hunting Pouch", so I may just take something from there.
No plans to use a kit. That would kinda defeat my intention.

Of course this painting wasn’t based on a photo from the actual scene and we never know how much is likely representative and how much is “props the artist could obtain for study.”
