Title: Experiments with strap weaving
Post by: Jakob on December 09, 2025, 06:35:50 AM
I had experimented a bit with various types of strap weaving, but found it hard to get a consistent weave. I'm sure it's something that could be learned, but I then made this:

First attempt with basic cotton yarn turned out like this, which is good enough that I can invest in some fancier linen/wool yarn.

(Note that I have strategically hidden the first few inches underneath the nicer bits, until I figured out how much to beat it. :D )

I changed the main rollers at the ends, as one guy complained it was hard to maintain even tension with the original design. I will also re-design the ratchet lock and add more teeth to it, as again, it would make it easier to maintain even tension.
Also, since all I'll ever weave on it is straps, I'm considering making it shorter and down to 8" wide (1 section of the heddle).  Getting it small enough to take with me when I'm sent to fire camps in the summer would be very handy.

That strap got mounted to my hunting powder horn and works exactly like a strap!.
