Title: January Online Match
Post by: alacran on January 08, 2026, 09:55:33 PM
NDduckhunter must be out duck hunting. Hope he is having better luck with that than Dennis had trying to reach him.
Our match for January comes from My Targets.com. It is target 2pdf.
(https://i.ibb.co/BKysfr2j/Target2.png) (https://ibb.co/HptgKxTY)
The rules are Red dot scores an X, the black ring scores a 10, the next ring scores a 9, and the last ring scores an 8. Half a ball has to cut the red ring line to score the higher number.
Five shots standing unsupported at 25 yards, or any position including bench at 50 yards.

Shot a new rifle today and called the far right shot. Will try again.

Wasn't sure how to score, so you decide.

I guess a 48 and a 49, sorry didn't read close enough and your instructions were clear.

Good shooting WVrazd! You are correct a 48 and a 49. Hopefully we will see more good scores.

I should’ve added that WV’s great shooting is going to be hard to beat.

That is still good shooting Dennis. Was one of the Xs your first shot?

First two shots were the X’s. Didn’t exactly create calm composure for the following three.

Taylor and I got out to shoot this month's postal match and our target stand was under snow, somewhere? We need to take out a sheet of 1/4" plywood, to stick in the snow for a backboard.
On top of that, my new knee re-attachment (1 1/2 months post op) was giving me fits, breaking through the snow crust and sinking to the knee.
Maybe next warm period. It was +1 today, but forecast to get cold again.

That's why I asked, when your first shot is an X there is only two ways to go, more Xs, not likely offhand, or down. Two Xs in a row, adrenalin is now a factor. Good shooting.

Oops, 25 yds offhand.
Stuck at 47. I didn’t spot my shots this time but a shot in the white area of the target is quite visible so knew the first three shots were 10’s.

The rifle is a Kibler Hawken and is the most shootable rifle I’ve ever owned.

Got out on a cold morning to try out the little .30 caliber mountain rifle I recently converted to percussion. The L&R flintlock never worked right and was always un dependable and slow. It still needs some work however, as it doesn’t work well with C&C caps and fails to go off or hangfires sometimes. I managed to shoot 2 targets at 25 yards offhand before the moosemilk froze.

I got a little over confident after the first 4 went into the black. I rushed the shot , thinking I’d put the next one with the others. That’s what happens when you peek, and don’t follow through. Even with percussion. I believe this little rifle would put them all in one hole if I could just hold still.

LOL - most rifles will, at least all of mine will, unless I am shooting offhand, that is.

Good shooting Okawbow. Good looking 49. WVrazd's 49 is still in the lead since he has an overall tighter group.

Darn. Still stuck at 47. I printed 5 targets when it was posted so maybe one more go.

Just found out I am out of magenta toner but will try it anyhow.
Danged stuff is expensive. :o
Cheap stuff is probably from someplace I try not to buy from.

I missed a good weather chance yesterday when it was 10 above. Right now -25 with wind chill at -51, NWS says the cold might last into early February.

I know, I am just a pansy. Real men would just throw on another coat and head out.

Had a FAR worse brain @$#% at Camp Perry this year. Missed the Presidents 100 by 1X. If I cast blame I have to look in the mirror.

Good shooting Dan.
WVrazd's 49 is still in the lead.
Patience for the last shot gets more elusive for me the older that I get.

nothing will make you pull the last shots quicker, than knowing your score
Title: Re: January Online Match

Knowing your score as it progresses is all part of the discipline required and much of the actual challenge. THAT'S my take on it and my excuse as well.
Poor patience has been my (1 of them) downfall(s) all my life.

You have to look on the bright side Dennis. You broke 47 with a 48 X, you are the only one to shoot any X's 4 that are solid X's and one that maybe an X.
You started with a 46 on your first target and you keep improving your score. Like you said "fun anyway".

New to the forum. As a matter of fact, the only forum I’ve ever been on. I would like to participate in some of these monthly postal matches. I tried to search through the forum about requirements, rules but was unable to find anything. Like I said, I’m brand new to this and maybe I just didn’t navigate to the right place. Do you guys/gals usually just post the pictures of your targets? I know it’s round ball only and I have gathered that you usually post the target to be used, distance. Can you have peep sights?

If you go to the first post on this thread, you will see the rules for this particular match. You also will see which target we are using and where to download it. I have been shooting these since I joined in 2018. I don't recall any particular rules other than using traditional muzzleloaders.
The person that wins the monthly match is responsible for the following months match. The match winner (match director) not only picks a target, but he also sets the number of shots, distance and position parameters. I don't believe that peep sights are banned since we are on the honor system.
Typically, we adhere to 1/2 ball rule, but that is up to the match director for the month. December's match did not go by that rule.
Pictures of the shot targets are posted so the match director can score them.
Hope to see your targets soon.

Someday I am gonna learn to proof read. These doggone “smart” things have started putting in what IT thinks I want to say. Of course “I” never make mistakes.  My phone is even worse that this thing. Why its got “am people” in the first sentence is beyond me.
We just had a cold snap, this winter has been really warm. Going back to the 40s maybe 50s in a couple of days. Right now wind is 25-45.  Life in the Eastern Slope and it starts going up about 100 yards from my house…

I post this target just to tell the story that goes with it.

Got up this morning, went out to shop and did a little work on my jaeger project, then back to house for a sandwich.

I saw the temp. was +18 :)

So I grabbed my Kibler SMR, it's bag and horn giving it a shake and hearing powder in it, got my target bag and spotting scope and headed out.  Our range does have a small shack to shoot from on cold days so I also grabbed my little buddy heater for the shack. (It was +18 but strong south wind so wind chill was about 0, of course I would be in a nice warmed shed.)

Got set up in the shed, heater running. Post holed my way out through the snow to the 50 yard line and put up a couple targets and got ready for an afternoon of shooting.

Loaded and took my first shot, the upper right.  Reloaded for second, but really had to thump horn to get a measure full, took second shot. Went to load a third and got maybe 5 grains. I beat and banged and thumped on horn - nothing. I thought cripes, it must be empty. Held it up to the sun, but could not see through the horn. So, I loaded up and came home.

Went straight out to my shop to fill the horn. Just a small amount and it was full. WHAT?  I took a wire pin flag to probe in and it was indeed full, but felt caked deeper in. I worked all this powder out with the wire, trickling it out and down my driveway to get rid of it. Then filled with fresh 3Fg.

Have you ever had powder in your horn cake up to where you could not get any out, even beating on it?

Back to my target, I submit 2 shots for 18 points.
