Title: First tomahawk

I went to another clubs rendezvous over the May long weekend and took part in my first hawk and knife throw. What a blast. Thinking about that, I helped another fellow with a forging demo over this past weekend (fathers day), and this is what we did. Ive seen very little to pattern it off, and kinda guessed at the construction. Imade it from 1.5 x .25 FB and welded a piece of a file in the cutting edge. I may have left it a bit too hard (temper),however I`m happy with the end result. Its seems to throw ok (from my limited experience), and Im` looking forwards to doing more... A question.... Can anybody reccomend a book/DVD etc where I can get more information on the subject of tomahawks... such as types, shapes, methods of construction, regional styles and such? .... thx...  :) Kerry

TOW has many books  on axes and tomahawks.  Ken

Looks very nice, thanks for sharing.  What is "FB"  and is that a rivet in the middle?

RobertS,  FB= flat bar. I forge welded the body from cutting edge to eye and the  weld started to open a bit by the eye when wedging the handle down, the rivet is an afterthought to keep the eye rigid .   :) Kerry

Good looking hawk.  What are you using to form the eye?

Thx Ken, for stretching the eye I first forged a oval drift from an old jackhammer bit, it measures (1x 1 1/4) at the top, tapering to about 1/2 x 3/4 over 10 inches. fwiw, great info on the redaviscompany site, surfed a bit off that and found this, great pics, check it out....  http://tatcalite.tripod.com/id69.htm   ...  :) Kerry
