Title: Also need help with this half stock as well.
Post by: wildcatter on December 24, 2010, 11:40:09 PM
This is the other rifle I referred to.  It is a half stock with the name Jacob Fisher written on it. That's about all I know. Pictures are attached.

Sellers "American Gunsmiths" has a Jacob Fisher , Bedford PA (     - 1849) & a Jacob Fisher, Canton Ohio. I would guess Ohio???

I'll have to consult my books, but I believe Jacob was working in or around Lynchburg, Va. George and Uriah and another worked around Strasburg Va. I believe Jacob was a little later than Uriah and George Fisher. I think George was a son of Uriah. I believe Jacob was related; just not sure how.

Although Sellers lists a Jacob Fisher in Canton, Ohio, my Ohio references do not list a Jacob Fisher anywhere in Ohio.

Yeah Smokingbuck, I noticed that...It makes me wonder if Sellers is correct.Sellers does say Halfstock. There is several Fishers in the Virginia books, but have found no Jacob in them.To me the gun looks more Ohio than Virginia or PA, but that late of a gun  it could be anywhere...Is there any name or address on the lockplate?

The wrist architecture made me think New York when I saw it, but I know very little about these rifles.

Has anyone checked the book "Canadian Gunsmiths"

After reading this, I checked THE CANADIAN GUNSMITHS, 1608 to 1900, by S. James Gooding.  There are two William Fishers, but no Jacob. Fisher seems to be a fairly common name among gunsmiths, I have several Fishers in Illinois and Iowa, but no Jacob. I thought the rifle might be Michigan-made, but the only Fisher listed in the Michigan book is Elam J. Fisher.
