Hi guys and gals,
I just finished this one up a few days ago. Posted it to another site and finally got time to get some more pics and post it here.
It is a .50 cal B weight Rice barrel, 42 inches long, Chambers Siler Deluxe lock. The finish is Danglers Orange first with various coats of LMF maple and walnut after that, Chambers oil for top coats. #3 piece of maple. The butt profile started as Pecatonica's Pre-Rev Kentucky. It's a nice fat wide butt. I re-shaped the underside a bit, squared it off and added a little bit of curve to suit my taste. I was shooting for a real simple, nothing fancy type of gun. Not quite a barn gun, but not too much fancier than one either.

The gun feels real nice and I've already sent Dick a nice Dunlap blank to have him shape the same butt profile on that piece of wood.

Very nice relatively simple rifle less patchbox. I like it.

VERY nise . We all have different tastes. My personal taste leand to a more darker browned barrel.
Congratulations are in order for a first rate build. Bob
-
Simply wonderful! And you put the rear sight right where I think they ought to go.
-
I like it! Good looking gun. Thanks for posting it.

Very Nice!! Love the color. The fit and finish look great.
-
Nice Ken! Looking forward to seeing it. Will you have it ay Williamsburg?
-
Thanks for the kind words folks. Yup James, I'm going to bring it with me to Williamsburg. I'm looking forward to that weekend.
-
Good job. Inleting , carving, color all looks great. What kind of finish did you use on the barrel? AL
-
Hi Al. I rust the barrel with LMF browning solution but I don't card it. It generally takes 3 coats and two to three days in my sweat box to get it evenly rusted. I check the bottom flat to see how deep its going. Then I use a combination of sandpaper, naval jelly, scotch brites, and elbow grease to get it all off. Then I use a cold blue like Van's or Birchwood Casey and I rub it back with steel wool till I get the color I like. Sometimes I'll do that part of the process two or three times till I'm OK with it. Then I heat it up and coat it with WD-40 to seal it. On my hunting guns I rub my barrels down with break free occasionally and they keep this look pretty well. They do seem to get a bit darker over time. Especially around the lock.
Hope that answers your question.

Very mellow and charming.

I like it lots

Everything works. Nicely done.

Sir,
D.Taylor +1! Mellow is exactly the word I would use to describe it, and beautiful!

Love barrel color and thanks for sharing how you do it.
-
My pleasure Bob. I learned of it in another thread a couple of years ago from Mike Brooks.

Thank you for the reply. AL

Very Nice!!!!!

A really appealing rifle that looks like it will actually get taken into the field. I keep looking at the engraving pattern on the sideplate; enough, but not too much. Your restraint is elegant.
-
elegant is a good word for it!! I like it very much. You do nice work Ken!!
-
great looking rifle! thanks for the post!
-
I LIKE it! It is not too plain, just enough extra to make it interesting. I have a couple of guns Stophel built me that are more or less in this group. I wanted something a man with a little extra money could afford, but not what a landed wealthy gent would spring for. You did very well.
-
Also...the sight radius is great for an old dude like myself.
-
Outstanding workmanship! Simple...Smooth....Mellow....Just right!
-
Thanks again folks. I truly appreciate all the kind words. Flintman, it is funny you should mention Stophel's stuff, as it is his work, Jim Kibler's, Roy's, and Don Getz's barn guns that I have been pouring over for inspiration lately. There is just sooo much good work to see out there! I think it was D. Taylor Sapergia that posted that Beck he'd just finished. It just blew me away. I find it all inspiring and intimidating at the same time.

Nice! ;D
