This one is signed in script on the barrel, undoubtedly the owner.
Either John McCowan or John McCown. Mc Cowan was a neighbor of William
in Putneyville.

Comments:

I am amazed at the number of high quality Schreckengost rifles that have been submitted to the museum this past year. This ongoing stream of fine guns with attractive mountings and inlays, extensive and elaborate engraving, "trademark" patchboxes, fine stock wood, etc. has caused me to rethink these later rifles, and better appreciate the great work and artistic detail put into them. This rifle highlights many of Schreckengost's better details, appears to be in untouched condition with great color and wear patterns, and is a great example of his work.
