Who cuts precise custom RB moulds?   I have had "factory" RB moulds and been less than impressed with them.
  I have just recieved an really incredible custom damascus .40 pistol barrel I ordered from Hugh Toenges for an upcoming personal project.  He uses .025 deep rifling and recommends a .375 ball and extra thick .030 and gets some 1 hole 25 yard groups with that combo patching.

 I also have a 50 round groove Rice and a more ore less standard 54 Colrain and want to get good quality moulds for them.

Am I correct in assuming that the idea of using the undersized ball and thick patch is that the ball is less likely to be distorted or damaged in its trips up and down the bore as opposed to a larger ball and a thinner patch?

I use a bigger ball (.535) plus a thicker (.018) patch. I'd use .020 if I could find it locally.

In a .54 I assume.  That'd be a real job to ram down a 40 or 50  :o

NEI Handtools.  I like the ones I bought awhile back.  They have a number of sizes.  If you want to pay for the tooling you can get any size they don't currently offer.

You just have to modify for caliber. I shoot .495 in my 50, with same patch.

Rice barrels in .50, shoot very nicely with a .495" ball (normal .005" under) and a .020" to .022" patch. 

Just to show what a good crown allows, we loaded a .508" ball in Taylor's Virginia rifle, Rice barrel, with a .019" denim patch, then pulled the ball with the patch strips 'wing's' and the integrity of the patch material was unharmed by the lands.

The balls must be pure lead. WW is not pure lead.

While that works with a good crown and .016" deep or shallower rifling, doesn't work well with .030" rifling. Usually one must try this themselves to understand what's happening.

I'm quite sure Hugh knows what he's talking about.  Perhaps the bore on his barrel mikes .385 or so, but he calls it a nominal .40 (like a .357 bullet in a '.38').

Ask he, he'll to tell you exactly what the bore is as well as the groove depth. 

Many here do not believe that exceptionally deep rifling is necessary, but Hugh seems to get good results using a machine rest and telesopic sight.
