Besides the recent release of the 1940 US Census, a recent development for researchers is the LDS Family History Library cataloging cemetery data collected by the Find-a-Grave organization of volunteers:

Thanks for posting this. I went to the find-a-grave website and found several early Illinois gunsmiths, a couple of them with obituaries. I also found my great-great grandfather's grave (a Civil War veteran) in California. I joined find-a-grave and have already added some information.
