Thought I would share this photo of the toe plate on a halfstock rifle by Wm. G. Shreckengost.
I thought it was exceptionally nice.

Shreckmeister,
Very nice indeed; the engraving is very pleasing to the eye.
It appears some of the screws are flat top, others are slightly oval top? May be the shadows.

Good morning Sir; Thanks for sharing the G. Shreckengost toe plate engraving. Very interesting styling. Have a Merry Christmas. AJ
-
Mr. Meister,
Very nice sir...thank you for sharing!
I can always tell when Christmas is near, as visions of Shreckengost's dance in your head ::) ::) ;D
Now, what about the rest of the rifle ??? ???
Peace Out Shreck ( NOT Meister ) ;)
-
Ya Flaydermaus, that vision of Shreckengost's toe only wets my appetite enough to want to see more! Thanks Rob for the teaser and Merry Christmas! Joel
-
Rob,
Outstanding! I don't want to say anymore.

Bill. The screws are all flat top. Thought you guys might like it. Can't recall seeing too many prettier than this one.
-
Just like a girl with long legs..........That toe plate goes all the way there!

JDM, Funny how everything can make us think about a pretty girl.

Here is the comb piece. Very delicately inlaid the full length of the comb terminating at the
tang and buttplate.

Mr. Meister,
Thank you for another Holiday Teaser ::)...very nice indeed. As you said, delicate and subtle. Not at all like any Shreckengosts' I know ;D
When will the next Holiday installment take place ???
Happy New Year to you and your family!
Peace Out Shreck ( NOT Meister )
As a footnote, the bottle of 16 year Lagavulin is still uncracked at my house :o

Then let's get crackin when the opportunity presents
-
The Shreckengost family sure had a talent for engraving. Did they make anything else, or do engraving on other objects ?
-
I've pondered that same question and looked for any evidence that he engraved other things without success. I have been told he did blacksmith work as well as gunbuilding but judging from the number of rifles I have found I am sure gunsmith was his primary occup.

Here is the tang, sideplate and breech. Barrel stamped "Postley Nelson" 1852-1858 Pittsburgh

The engraving on the barrel is a nice touch. Hardly seen at all on longrifles.
-
Yes you did and that is a fine old rifle.

I need better quality photos before I post the overall rifle.
-
Very nice rifle.
I thought you were just posting one photo per week, to prevent us from overdosing. :)
-
;) There's an element of that. Drama enriches the experience.

This cheek piece represents the pinnacle of Wm Shreckengosts work with multiple piercings and
delicate engraving. It aint like layin an oval in there!

This just keeps getting better and better. Do you have any history on this rifle? I wonder if it was his personal rifle or made for a family member. Definitely made for someone special not the ordinary 1850's rifle.
-
Jim,
The guy has some history on it in a box somewhere. He recently moved and can't locate it.
If he finds it, I will let you know.

I came across a similarly designed target rifle a couple years ago that was not quite as ornately decorated, but
the condition was a bit rougher. I also wondered if this might be his personal rifle, but unless the owner finds
the documentation from his grandfather, we will never know. Of course we have his son's personal rifle
in the Library (swivel breech listed under Lincoln Shreckengost)
