Andrew Joy made rifles in my hometown and I've always wanted a nice example of his work. Well this is
a great example, but unfortunately, it won't be coming to my house. Super carved Western PA rifle.

Nice looking rifle!
I like the narrow pointy lock and side plate surrounds on these western PA guns!

Do you know if this patchbox style is typical for Joy? Is it a Western PA typical?
I'm gathering info for a build and have run into this patchbox on NY rifles. Not with the outstanding engraving that this shows but the same shape and piercings.

It's not a typical patchbox for western PA and this rifle is not typical for Joy.

A two-year degree will be good enough. With the cost of tuition you'll save, you might have change left over for another gun. :)
I can't play in that league of guns just yet - take a zero off and I'd still expect to have to sleep outside for a month.

I was looking at that rifle last night, he's extremely overpriced on it. The Border rifle is a good $3000.00 over priced also.

I have a 50 cal. (approximately) Percussion, Full-stock, rifle made by Andrew Joy. At least I think so because the marking on the top flat of the barrel (A Joy) is exactly like the one in the photos above. The stock seems reminiscent of something made in the later 1800's in Ohio though. I'll get pictures as soon as I can. It is a very plain rifle and I'd bet the stock is walnut. I'll get some pictures so you guys can ID it better.

I've seen both "A.S. Joy" signed* in script and "A JOY" stamped on guns of different styles (earlier vs mid-late 19th century). My assumption was they were pieces from different points in Andrew S. Joy's career. It is also possible that some of the guns we see with his mark were just sold or worked on by his shop.
*forgot to specify signed rather than stamped for the former before I hit post.

Interesting. That is certainly different than either of the Joy guns I'm familiar with. Is it possible that its is a restocked barrel?

I kinda wonder if it isn't re-stocked too........but still done way back in the day?

It's entirely possible. I've seen barrels reused from decades earlier on guns still built in the 18th or 19th century. If they barrel isn't hard to remove, you might be able to tell if the "staples" on the bottom have been moved to accommodate changes. That still wouldn't necessarily confirm it was restocked though because it could have simply been shortened at some point.

I was told that John Wallace, a gunsmith who worked in Freeport, PA (my home town),
was apprenticed to Joy. I've never seen a signed gun by Wallace but I imagine they were plain guns, made late in the percussion period.

I saw this image recently. It's a great looking rifle, but does it look like a A. Joy ? There are more details on pg. 6 of the upcoming auction.

I'd be willing to let go of the rifle in the Aug. 24, 2017 post. It hasn't changed any. I'm working on helping my son restock a long barreled T/C 54 Cal Flintlock. We're using a fancy curly maple stock that is pre inletted. Should be a nice shooter when we get it done, hopefully this winter. Dave
I'll try to put this on the For Sale board soon.
