I like this thread. I've posted these before, but I'll add them here where they are appropriate.
These are images of me and two moose I shot with my .62 cal Hawken, two successive years. I've got to go back to that place!

..and here's a ruffed grouse I shot with my Manton 15 gauge pelter. I think I'll always remember this one, as he was flying hard right to left at about 25 yds.

Merry Christmas to all. Great idea re the photos.
Taylor, do you have a photo of the moose you got with the "Bess" ?
-
I'll have to go hunting, Bob! That was BDC...before digital cameras, winter '79. I'll have a look.
-
I din't normally take pictures before the digital revolution in photography and wouldn't have had this one either, but I got this bird first thing in the morning and was home just as my wife was going out, so she memorialized the moment, Hah! When we got the pictures back from the drug store I remember thinking, who's that old guy with my bird?!?!?!? 20Ga. no choke.

About an hour after posting some hunt pics above, I headed out to see if I could fill my last turkey tag. It was a short hunt. :)

A couple of bucks from last year;
This was my first attempt at building a fowler, 12ga, jug choked, took me a year to finish it. On my first trip to the woods with it this buck walked out.

This rifle was my first build, it took me two years to finish. I have killed 5 or 6 deer with, it is a .54. Last years deer, didn't know the remrod was sticking out when I took the selfie;

Bob Miller sent me three pictures to post on his behalf. This nice bear was shot with a NorthEast fowling piece 12 bore with paper cartridge, 120 gr. BP and a .715" ball.
I'm sure he'll comment further when he sees his pictures.

pretty sporting of you killing the easter bunny coming to give your kids some easter eggs, shame on you! :D
-
Thank you very much for posting those photos for me , Taylor. The Chambers New England fowler is my favourite, most used hunting gun. The hunting distances aren't that long here in the Eastern Ontario woods, so the smoothbore is more than adequate in the accuracy dept. That load combo snatches the life out of everything it hits. The .62 rifle is my moose gun, but it wanted exercise, so I used it for deer last year.

I merely posted this for a friend, I did not do the dastardly deed mysef, However, I surely laughed & quite heartedly at that, when I saw the picture.
There must be more than one bunny cavorting with chickens, as this picture is 3 or more years old & I noticed there were eggs found at my Granddaughter's house.
-
Great photos guys. Bob, that looks like a nice bear and that doe sure does look to be a big one. Too bad about that rabbit though, but that's what you get when you try to steal some kids easter eggs. ;D

Ok Guys Be easy on Me..
This was my first black powder turkey shot with a T/C New Englander 12 ga.
This hooked me deep...
The start of my transition away from cf shotguns.
I now hunt them with a flint English half stock 10 ga. cyl bore. (Dunlaps fowler kit)
20-25 yard shots...Hooked deep

I let my little buddy shoot half of these. We took turns. Ran out of shot cause I had to shoot several of them twice to get them to let go of the limb they were clinging to. My buddy ran back to the truck to get some 12 gauge modern shells so we could cut them open for the shot to finish the day. Dang took us over an hour to clean all of them.

Little 40 and supper at the camp. Rip out the breast. Slice it in two. Beat each piece with a meat hammer on a cutting board to make a nice tender pattie. Cover in seasoned flour and fry a meal for two. SOP for a fall lunch in the Potomac Highlands of WV

Thanks for the compliment on the gun, Mole Eyes. No, I didn't build it but did make a few minor modifications with help from a BP friend who does build occasionally. It weighs around 7.5 pounds or maybe a tad less and has a rear sight. It's accurate for deer well past 50 yards and does well with shot. It's a favorite and a keeper; I just like it a lot. And you're right; good, plain quality and no frills.

Here a deer and a bear I got this year. The deer was taken with a .58 by Ron Luckenbill. The bear was with a .50 by Mike Miller.

No Pat, I'm in western Montana. The Lexington in my user name comes from the 1st Lexington aircraft carrier in WW2. I had an uncle that was on her.
-
Small world. My Dad was on the Lexington prior to WWII. Then he went to submarine school, and spent the rest of the war in the submarine service. He served on the Wahoo and the Drum. He luckily shipped off the Wahoo just before she went out on her last war patrol. Sorry no hunting pictures this year so far. The deer I shot in the early season required two shots. Leaving no tasteful way to take pics. But it sure tasted good. BJH
-
That's pretty neat that your dad was on the Lexington. This is a hunting thread so I will just say that my uncle did have a Japanese hunting license signed by Nimitz ;D

This was back in 2011 or 2012. The 16 ga flint fowler is one I had not even completed when I took it out. Note the "colors" on the barrel where I soldered the lugs on the day before. Probably can't make it out but the front sight is a piece of #12 copper wire since I didn't have a proper front sight to out on it.
The 12 ga percussing double and yellow lab belong to my hunting buddy.

Four small bears disguised as raccoons.
We skinned them and I gave them to a butcher friend as his brother
was a trapper. I said throw that bag of coon hides on your scale to see
what it weighs. 4 coon hides. 27 pounds.
The lighter colored gun is a 40 cal.
The dark gun is a 32 cal.

I'm mighty glad to see this site! I read on another forum about a fellow getting basically 'chewed out' for posting a photo of his deer kill because there are 'some folks' that don't care to see dead animals! As I sat and pondered that situation the thought occurred to me that the folks that are so....shall we say...'sensitive' about seeing dead animals ride around on leather auto seats, walk on leather shoe soles, wear leather belts, etc. but apparently have never read from a very popular book that:
"And God said let man have dominion over beast of the earth and fowls of the air!"
I guess all those ribeye steaks, pork chops, and fried chicken are made in a factory up in Chicago!! :o :o

Not sure I told ya where I took that pic?
That rock wall surrounds an OLD cemetery, just down the road from where I killed that bird.
Dr. John Sappington, that invented Quinine is buried there, along with his family and descendants. One of which is our Confederate Governor of Missourah, Claiborne Fox Jackson!
I also have permission on that farm as well, the Trade Gun is ready to fill tag #2!!!

Yesterdays bird, first of this season. 20 lbs. 1 inch hooks, 9 inch beard. 20 gauge flint. 5 yard shot.

Great photo Shovelbuck ;D

Forgot to add some sika pics! Flintlocks and kayaks always make for a nice, cooperative combo. Nothing big as far as antler, but any of these buggers on public land is a triumph.

I got one of these some 15 + years ago and didn't know what species of deer it was, but it was definitely the tastiest. Furry and squatty compared to our whitetail, I hadn't seen one since then but your pics brought back some happy memories.
-
I lived on Haida Gwaii (formerly The Queen Charlotte Islands) 90 miles off the coast of British Columbia, for over three years in the early 70's. At that time, there was no season or bag limit on the Coastal Blacktail deer, and I shot dozens and dozens of them with my T/C "Hawken" flint rifle in .50 cal. Those were good times, and Heather and I would buy chicken from time to time to get a break from venison, halibut, crab, trout and salmon. Now, nearly fifty years later, we live in north central BC and pay a fishing guide so that we can harvest seafood on our west coast. I haven't shot a Sitka deer since I moved off the islands. But it was great hunting, and fantastic eating.
-
They are exotics down here in Texas (105 degree heat index right now) and there is no limits, seasons or restrictions on them other than what the land owner requires. In fact, if any exotic is on your land, even if it got out from a high fenced game ranch adjacent to your property, you can harvest it. That buck tasted like corn fed sirloin beef though, and elk is the only venison that I've had that is close.
-
Sitka and sika are two different critters. Sitka are blacktailed deer, closely related to mule deer, while sika are closer to elk on the family tree and are generally exotics in the US. Our herd here came from 5 original sika that were imported in the late 1800's and released not far from my home. We now have a completely wild herd of well over 15,000 animals with a harvest of a couple thousand annually. Mainly in our county (Dorchester) and a few surrounding counties, mainly living in the salt marshes and swamps, although they are the devil on neighboring farm lands. There are some larger subspecies on game farms and escaped, places like Texas and New Zealand, but ours are the Yakushima subspecies, from Yakushima Island in Japan, and rarely get over 100lbs dressed for stags and average 45lbs dressed for hinds. Scream (bugle) and wallow just like elk, and probably the best tasting critter there is on the grill. ;D
-
Taylor and I were raised in Dorchester - however it was village, population 700, not a county. Our Dorchester is located in South Western Ontario, Canada.
-
Here is a picture of my morning hog hunt in Bullock county, AL. Got to the stand at 0520. Hogs were already there but in the shade. This one walked out into the lighter part of the field. Bad mistake. Gave me enough light to see the front sight. The .54cal. Virginia lowered the boom.

Good eats there. Nice rifle ;D
-
That explains the furry coat that I did not recognize! Sika...not Sitka!
One learns something every day, if they are listening and not talking.
-
Beautiful rifle.Nice looking pig.Just in time for the 4 of july pig roast time.
-
Daryl and Taylor maybe we need to swap Dorchester hunts! Mine is on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where depending on the day and tide I'm either two feet above sea level or one foot below. Ten sika for one moose sound about right?! ;D
-
More pics of the rifle on my blog. www.bricestultzhisblog.blogspot.com Look under "Ray rifle"

All these great hunts are impressive to say the least. The guns pictured are eye candy.

Congrats on the hog!
Are we seeing both entrance and exit holes in that picture?
If so looks like that .54 got good penetration.

Gents, no where as impressive as deer, hogs, and turkeys, not to mention whole bags of squirrels and game birds. I have been nailing the odd rabbit in our garden, with a late mates' flintlock he gifted me with both a PH Naval rifle and PH 1st Gen Volunteer .451 just before he died.
I finished up with 7 rabbits in the freezer all shot with this rifle, out to ranges of about 50 yards. Some I got off the back stoop whilst sitting in my rocker (https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1012.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf241%2Fheelerau%2FPA030001.jpg&hash=ef51e2992f53f258a73cba42e8ba3237a5b1685e) (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/heelerau/media/PA030001.jpg.html)

ScottH in answer to your question:
The .54 shot through from the top to the bottom of the rib cage centering the spine downward and out by the breast bone. I was shooting about 50yds. from an elevated shooting house. The holes behind the ear were from me trying to hit the head with a .38 special while it was thrashing around. Didn't want to get too close in case it got back on its feet. ;D My buddy sqrldog said it sounded like I was having a fire fight. I've seen armadillos thrash around like that after a .22mag. hit them and get up and run slam out of sight.

Had a memorable morning that tested my resolve today. Shot this nice fat doe and by the time the smoke cleared, I had no idea which way she ran after the shot. Since she had come out of a corn field, I started my search there as in my experience, 90% or better will head back to where they came from. I spent a lot of time searching for sign in the corn but kept coming up empty handed. Finally looked another direction and found the blood trail. From there she was only 30 yards.
She's all butchered and in the freezer. :) As a side note....no camo, no blind, just sitting on the ground in some weeds. .490 ball, 80 gr. FFF.

Mate, what on earth are those two critters lying side by side?
-
woodchucks - ie: ground hogs - Eastern version of a Western marmot - herbivore - makes large holes in farmer's hay fields and pastures, also digs around buildings, etc. Large mound of dirt at main entrance (tips over hay wagons and breaks axles), with vertical escape hole nearby hidden in the grass so you or a domestic animal might break a leg by stepping into it. They were vermin - field rats of the highest order - but young ones can be tasty.
-
We have wombats that do that sort of thing !! Thanks for that.

I have literally shot 100's of whistle pigs whilst living in Davenport. Shot all of them with a single shot .22 with open iron sights from 50-100 yards. Had to use super dupper speed hollow points to put them down. Always knew I hit when I heard the ""thwop". Town had sprung up all around us and forced all the varmints onto out 6 acres. I have one old male living in hole my barn since I have been in New Liberty (6 years now). He's a cagey old boy, rarely ever see him and when I do it's just a flash. I'll get him someday....... ;)
-
Yep ! grew up on the whistle pigs both as a sport with all sorts of firearms and archery, including trapping, Mighty good table fare barbecued
when young. Hides make good strings and hunting pouches as the leather is very tuf and durable Also takes a mighty fine eye to see their nose poked out of the hole at a distance. Very good hunting practice for all ages before these blasted coyotes decimated their numbers around here! Almost forgot
they make good pets when captured very young but be careful of those chompers under their nose!
-
I've heard them characterized as a "kill 'em all and ask questions later" critter. Funny, but I see them all the time around the city; but have never run across one in the brush. And yes, they do make good pets when captured young. Pugnacious little guys, too.

Love that wood on the fowler. I could carry around a smoothbore like that. How much carving is done on one of Tip's precarves?

Somehow my post almost got lost amongst the flowers and the turkey, so I'm repeating it for clarity's sake.

Dark horse, I don't know...."Bowkill" on here bought everything from Tip and built the Fowler. Was for sale on here this passed April...I bought it from him.. ..I believe it was a Dubbs Fowler precarve..
Tips parts and kits are pretty well liked from what I've read...

I'm still blow away that a gun that size is so light and balanced...that's the 44" Colerain turkey barrel on it...
Patterns well too...very confident to 35yds. Funny no matter what I've tried it almost always throws a pretty decent pattern...and I've tried a number of different things...cant complain about it not being fussy!
-
I admired that gun when he first built it an I still do now. Looks like its fulfilling its intended purpose to me as well ;D

I'm having a good time with my .62 trade gun this year. I put it together from a kit from North Star West. From small to big game these smoothbores are hard to beat.

Spent the first part of the week in western Maryland for the annual bear hunt. Shot this big sow Monday evening, sitting on the ground, at 10 yards, on public land, with my .58 P Berry I built last winter! Heck of a hunt! Saw one smaller bear that same morning.
http://www.times-news.com/news/bear_hunt/maryland-bear-hunt-includes-rare-circumstances/article_83a29476-9add-11e6-af0f-f71a32c6583f.html
-
terrific looking bear! Nice weight.
Hope you rendered down the fat!
madmtmike.
-
That's a big bear no matter where you hunt.
-
Nice Bear Osprey. Any 350# bear is nice but a sow that heavy is outstanding. Good job.
-
I haven't done the fat yet, but it's sitting in the cold room at the butchers for me, project for Sunday (3 more days of MZ deer up next). Got two overfull 5 gallon buckets of fat off her, and that wasn't trimming anything small! It was 2" thick on her back.
-
The internal fat, I think, is more precious than the outside lard and results in more actual oil that is clear like gin, less shortening when rendering.
A double boiler system (safer) also results in not overheating the oil. Overheating produces more shortening, or HEAVY thick 'grease' which turns hard in colder weather.
Bear fat shortening makes terrific pie crusts.

Today was opener for fall turkey here in PA

Is that one of your own builds? I sure like the wood also.

Mike - I got $0.05 that says the rifle is one of Jim Kibler's SMR's.
dave
-
It's one of Jim's "seconds" He rejected it because of some heartwood. I couldn't resist the discounted kit price and quality.
I felt kind of funny buying a kit gun but after seeing one in person and receiving the offer for an immediate shipment, discounted "second" I jumped on it.
Light, well balanced, accurate and carefully engineered, this is the only gun I own that I did not build but is one of my
favorites.
Kevin
-
You have a good eye PPatch.
Kibler produces fine kits but they all appear to be flinters.
Then I'd have to find somebody other than me to finish it out.
I sure like the lightweight look of those, I've been carrying 11 lb Sharps & Hawken long enough.
Thanks gents.

Nice work with the scatter guns!!
-
Didn't anyone hunt in November this year?!?! ;D
-
Here is one I shot on 11-30-16. Shot it through the heart at 40yds. It ran about 40-50yds. before realizing it was dead and crashing. Thought it was a doe until I turned it over to drag it out of the woods. The rifle was built by Boggis. Story is he was laid up with a broken leg and passed time by building the rifle. .50cal. with a 28in. tapered H&H barrel and Davis lock. Also has Bomar pistol sights There is a better picture of it on my blog. Nov 2015 post. www.bricestultzhisblog.blogspot.com (http://www.bricestultzhisblog.blogspot.com) Nothing like touching off a flinter after sundown. Like a flash bulb in your face for a few seconds.

My muzzleloader season started yesterday the 1st and ended this morning. A bit longer distance than I like to shoot but I had a solid rest and felt confident with the shot. 140 yards and dropped him where he stood with a shoulder shot. 80 grains FFF, .490 ball. Ball exited off side.

Shovelbuck thats some good shooting. On my hunting grounds 60 yds is a long shot so I doubt I could have made that long of a shot being I dont practice past 75 yds or so
-
Great shooting, Shovelbuck, and a nice buck. Most of my hunting was down in Georgia where I lived for 62 years. The bush is thick in the Deep South and, like wattie said, 60 yards is a long shot. I had one shot at 75 yards and two at around 100 yards. I had to hide behind hay bales in a large field to get the two 100s. IIRC, all others were 60 yards or under, sometimes well under.

Thanks Allen! I'm leaning towards these larger rb's did not feel like i was over gunned on this one..
-
Nice! Way to go guys!
-
wattlebuster and hanshi, thanks for the kind words. Our hunting here in central Ne. is river bottom with crop fields bordering it. This guy was heading across a rye field towards the timber where i intercepted him. This was the 50th shot through the gun since I built it last July and I'd only shot a few at 100 yds. but they were right on.
As a side note...........I'm really liking this Chambers deluxe Siler, 50 shots and I haven't touched the flint at all yet. :)
-
That's some good shooting there!Shovel! Atta-Boy!..Its just funner with a flintlock!
-
Finished out this year's deer season with a nice doe last night. 52 yards offhand, picking a hole through brush....
(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1140.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn566%2Ftddeangelo%2F2016%2520deer%2FB661693E-09D5-47A8-9E89-9C2E3FBD069A_zps3afybapj.jpg&hash=885dd0f58e5f64bab452d2b269da89ff10a3cc34)
Rifle was built by Allen Martin, inspired by the John Schreit rifle. 46" Hoyt 1:56 swamped barrel of 62 caliber, Davis Colonial lock, 0.600 round ball (cast by moleeyes36), blue striped pillow ticking patch, bear fat/beeswax patch lube, 120gr 2F Goex, and for complete details, a Neolithics English flint in the cockjaws.
Complete pass through, although she was at an angle I didn't quite perceive. The entry looks perfect. Problem is, she was angled toward me a tad, and the exit was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the ribs. 175 yards or so of blood trailing later, I found her dead in a creek.
This one is my 3rd overall for the year (one with my bow, one with a bolt action, and now this one), and this will become dried "beef", sausage, and bologna. Well, except for the backstraps and loins. Those are never ground or processed, other than grilled to medium rare. ;)
Third season with the rifle, and third deer to its credit.
-
Shot this one on Inauguration Day. Didn't think Donald would care. My Old Ugly rifle is great for tree stand hunting. Big sights and lightweight. Our season doesn't go out til Feb. 10.

I wonder what the historians will say in 200 years about a Morgan Pad 'found' on a flinter.? ;)
And, sights you can see.
NOT traditional but, I like it! ;D
Cheers,
Smoketown

I've gotten 7 deer with muzzleloaders now, and here are a couple pictures.
These are pictures of the biggest one I have gotten, and the one that I am most proud of that I got with a matchlock.
The big boy was with my .62 tulle at 35 yards, and the doe was with my .75 matchlock at 45 yards!

First rifle I've "built". I took a doe with it this season as well.
Sure feels good to drag a deer out taken with a rifle that was put together with your own hands...
-
Man, but I'm jealous. Seems everybody's been shooting big deer. Me, well I got skunked.

My Mark Silver North Carolina rifle took a spike yesterday. Not as big as I hoped for but it will be some fine eating. .54 cal. using a .535 patched round ball lubed with a homemade concoction 1/2 TOW mink oil 1/2 coconut oil 100 grs. 3F. About forty yard shot. DRT. Next one will be much larger or it can pass safely by the stand. Just needed some meat.

Tim Well done you did good. Also you saved yourself four hundred on a taxidermy bill. Mighty fine eating ahead. Oldtravler

Nice, Tim!
Guys- thanks for the pictures!
-
Tim, that is a particularly nice looking rifle; the kind I like to take to the woods with. And that young buck will fill up all those hollow spaces in your freezer.
-
Ended up the season with the one bear and two whitetails with the flinter this year. One deer was a WT doe, the other this 3 year old 6. He was never much for rack and was a bully, so he had to go so my better deer can stay and grow for next year. 90g FF, .570 ball.

Feral Hog hunting on the Suwannee River in Levy County Florida. The one on the left (304 pound sow) I shot with a flintlock rifle I built a few years ago and using a .495 round ball and 80 grains of 2fg Olde Eynsford. The one of he right (188 pound boar) was shot by a friend with a caplock rifle using a .495 round ball and 80 grains of 3fg GOEX. Now the real work begins.

Good looking bunch of porkchops. Congrats to you and your friend. I hog hunt a little during the off months. Really won't start til May after turkey season. They are fun to hunt but are a really destructive animal in the wild. You kill them with dogs, stalk hunting, or another method. Tim
-
Tim,
I hunt them by sitting in a likely spot or spot and stalk. The land owner has some dogs but doesn't use them for hog hunting.

Matt..You are living right!..Outstanding 2017 turkey season! Take a bow!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thur. may 4 th 5 pm. 2017 spring turkey season Minnesota..farm land
Had 2 monster toms doing the puff up shuffle into my set up....
took and hour for them to get to 40 yards..I was a wreck in anticipation..
With the gun up waiting for them to close in to under 30 yards I hear and catch movement out my left eye.
turkeys..5 more toms 9 inch or better flanking me in my brushed in wooded point hide..
They were coming to join the fray!
swing left with the flinter and pick the 4 th bird..gotta wait for separation..touched off and all I see is the biggest cloud of
smoke with zero wind..... immediately start my internal chant "please be down"-"please be down" etc...
.finally smoke clears and its
turkey dinner time!
Using my first bp fowler ....a 12 ga.t/c New englander i converted to flintlock.

I'd love to get on that longhuners site, but for some reason it seems to never work for me. Don't expect much here at home on the older computer and dialup connection, but even on a newer laptop and wifi I can't get that site to work at all. :(
