Hi All!
I will try to build a double barrel shotgun from the nice book by William R. Brockway :)
Have a Swede Husquarna made Lefaucheux cal 16, and Manton Flintlocks is on the way from the great land Amerika in the west ;)

I look forward to your excellent work!
-
Hey guys, I am REALLY looking forward to this!
Fred
-
No task is too daunting for Runar. We all look forward to your project. Manton locks to boot, wow. Best wishes on this build.
-
Just what I needed, I've been thinking about a side by side, and here you go and hit us with another sweet project....Going to be "Very interesting"......Tom
-
I like the setup you have for mounting the barrels in the lathe. Thanks. J.H.
-
Go, Runar! You have my attention!
-
This build is going to be a good one. With youre talents Oh yeah cant wait to see this.
-
Yes - Jerry - agree that "action" vice is being used very well indeed.
-
Runar, I love to follow your projects and very much admire your talent. I built a 16ga double flint about 10 years ago and I was lucky in that I found a set of un-chambered barrels so I got to keep the inch or so at the breech you had to cut off. Good luck with your project and judging by your past work, I expect your shotgun will rival those of Manton or Purdey.
-
Yes - Jerry - agree that "action" vice is being used very well indeed.
Ha! I just noticed that! I was entertaining the thought of a build like this just the other day. I'll definetly stay tuned! Will
-
This should be fun Runar. I built one a couple of summers ago and really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to watching your progress.
I had issues with getting the lock springs to clear the barrels, so you want locks with the springs as low as possible. As shown in the book, it will require you to file notches in the sides of the barrels. I am sure you will figure it out!
-
Oh boy! :)
-
Thanks, this is gonna be great!
-
Most excellent, Runar! Brockway's book is full of great information. I'm certain this will be a fun project for you and all of us.
Curtis
-
Good idea, I look forward to seeing your project progress.
-
Looks like you are off to a stellar start. Looking forward to progress reports.
-
looking forward to this one too! Between Runar, Taylor and Firelock, I'll never get anything done anymore. I'll just sit back with popcorn and a beer and watch you guys! But at least I'll maybe learn something, instead of just turning my brain to mush watching TV.
-
Hi All! and thank you so much :)
Ok, Mr Brockway say cal 16 use 7/8x14 and I do the treads be very thin in the front but will do the gun and proof test the barrels if it dont stand it I will get a new barrel ;)
Made a 1-1/4 long bolt and then file the length same comprende my bad english?Make the breach plug round and eysy, will soft solder a bit rib as last barreljob

Runaround, what is the piece that has a hole thru it and is mark 7x1/4 ?
-
FALout, it is a filing guyd for the hight of the treading in barrel 1-1/4" in lenght ;) to be same in both barrels
Runar
-
Thanks Runar - I was wondering that as well.
-
Runar, if the 7/8 plug does not work out consider a 22MM x 1,50. I had the same concerns about barrel wall thickness as you in my 16 and opted for the metric.
-
Hi All! And thank you
L.Akers, I will remember that :) Breach plugs soon ready for standing breach. Beeswaks on haksaw, and you saw like in butter ;)

Runastav: I think you should have cut the rectangular holes about 1/4" further up the plate - closer to the top plate. The way it is now, you will have a lot of standing breech above the plain of the barrels.
-
Appears with the heights as made, the tang will be very thin, if reduced to just barely above the height of the barrels.
I guess we'll see what happens later.
-
Taylor and Daryl, yes the top is ca 5mm to high and will be maskined away so the next photos will show the result ;)The topstrap is before maskining ca8mm thick. The finished topstrap will be 1/8" ca 3mm and line with barrelribtop.

Very exciting new build Runar! Brodern og meg satsa på ein liten tur innom, om ikkje så lenge.

The barrels appear to be too low because he does not have the rib extension installed yet. I'll betcha the height will be correct after it's on.
-
If you visualize how the tang will be you can see that eveything is just right. He has this figured out exactly.
-
Is this cool or what!

Hi all and thank you!
Ok, here is how I do it ;)When bending the tang, I use aluminium in visejaws and tight hard and pound with hewy hammer just over the radius and it works

Does that keep the current hole from "collapsing" into the previous hole?

Hi All! after a nice brake begin a litle building ;)By the vai, I read in Muzzleblasts March 2016 by Fred Lipp about Flintlock double barrel building, a 21 year projekt is finished hehe :)
The lock bolt is 4mm , and I will use a pedersoli made triggers and reshape the front to flintlock style.

One of the best topics here in a long time

Runstav got to see Napoleon's double flint. Beautiful firearm. Double barrel flintlocks are one of my favorites. Wish you the best an will be following this closely. Oldtravler

I was really concerned that the topic was removed from the forum.
I love Runar's work, he is a true artist.
This "IS" one of the best work in process builds I have seen.
My most sincere compliments.
Fred

I'm a little confused by you lock screw, are going to have enough material to get rid of the Allen screw slot? I have a set of 12gauge barrels waiting to be used in such a project, I'm just unsure about the breaching. I've done single barrels in the lathe, but I know there's not a lot to work with on shotgun barrels. Your doing a great job, can't wait to see how you finish this one Runar.
-
Can this be made a sticky somewhere so it's easy to find when done ? The book by Bill is wonderful but seeing it in real time quality photos is brilliant. I built one many years ago and although somewhat crude due to my being a neophyte (32 years ago). A bit crude but totally functional. There simply were not good locks and such to work with.I said I would never do another but a couple years back a guy in our club got all inspired after reading Bill's book and decided to build one. He got the barrels breeched by a machinist, a standing breech started and the barrel channels plowed in. He then quit on it. I bought all he had (barrels, wood, locks, triggers trigger guard, buttplate, and standing breech) for $300. My plan is to make it my final piece de resistance.60 plus guns away from being a neophyte I figure I can do a batter job this time.I plan to farm out the engraving and checkering. BTW early flint doubles(some) used the ground angle breech plugs like this one so it's totally correct way of doing it. The notched breech plugs allowed a narrower gun which was common on later guns. A great build along. Congrats sir.

Hi All and thank you I am humble :)
Falout, the allen screw is only temporari ;) So I reshape the triggerplate

Can this be made a sticky somewhere so it's easy to find when done ?
Yes, once he finishes up we will let it run for a week or two in Building and then move it over to the Tutorials forum.

Nice job Runastav...that's quite the bench!
-
quite the bench indeed, betcha he knows right where everything is too ;)
-
Looking great.
"Taylor, if the Italian folks(Pedersoli) can do we can Wink I will soft solder a rib bit when the breach plugs are finished with liner and the clean out screw, photo show my cal 12 Pedersoli perkusjon shootgunbarrel."
That is how I did mine. The remaining rib you cut off the breech section will match perfectly. The idea in the book to make one plug that has an integral rib and keys in to the other plug would be very time consuming to make. The matting on the rib would not match the barrel either.

Nice job Runastav...that's quite the bench!
I was going to say - "like mine" but not true, mine is at least twice as deeply laden.

I hate to interupt this double gun love fest, but you knowledgable guys do remember that it was the flint double guns poor performance that inspired the invention of the percussion cap.
Hungry Horse
-
It is probably just my observation, but I think that if a shotgunner misses a bird, he simply buys a new more expensive gun. And THAT is why the percussion ignition system was invented. Couldn't be the shooter.
-
With all due respect to whoever wrote the book shown, using a rotary file (burr) to shape the wood near the tang is terrible advice. Don't always believe what you read. It doesn't take a skillful or knowledgeable person to write. Sorry, but this sort of thing makes me cringe.
Jim
-
I agree with Jim...there's a place for power tools but this is not one of them. Things go sideways in a hurry with power tools and wood. Sharp chisels are the right tools for that job. Much more control.
-
With total respect to Runar!
This guy would make Track of the Wolf close it's doors..........he buys nothing!
Makes a fine looking entry pipe for a shotgun out of a freaking piece of pipe :o
Give me a break!
I'll bet he doesn't even buy nails.
I'd be afraid to park my old pick-up truck near him....every loose piece would be gone.
And in a day or two I'd see it on some fine looking gun.
Doesn't buy a butt plate, trigger, trigger plate, tang, barrel rib, trigger guard..... :)
Runar you are "THE MAN"
He makes all you other geezers newbies.
Thank you again for your very fine post.
My most sincere compliments.

While I don't prefer to use power tools at home building stuff that I do for fun, I can use power rotary tools without worrying about them getting out of control. Die grinders and all that is associated with them kinda go along with what I do for a living so I've gotten rather good with them.
-
Runar, I'm simply amazed at your skill level. The ease with which you transform random materials at hand into the exact part needed is simply amazing! :) You remind me very much of my father. He would definitely enjoy watching your gun come together.
My hat is off to you! :) :)
-
Runar, what diameter and type of pipe did you use for that entry thimble?
Thanks, Curtis

Hi All , and thank you for coments!
Hungry horse and Taylor, if I want a Double Flintlock Shotgun for shoting/Colleting I must build it myself ;)

With all due respect to Mr. Kibler and Mr. Sapergia, That book was written by Bill Brockway, one of the finest craftsmen that ever existed in this sport. If he used a rotary file to shape the wood, you can bet he could control it.

Runar, this shotgun is really taking shape. Can't wait to see this finished. Keep up the great workmanship!

Bill: I agree with you on your observations about Mr. Brockway. I would simply caution a new-comer to this craft to acquire the necessary skill before attempting to use a power grinder. I, for example, couldn't do it. I know my limitations. And the last thing I need is to do it fast.

With all due respect to Mr. Kibler and Mr. Sapergia, That book was written by Bill Brockway, one of the finest craftsmen that ever existed in this sport. If he used a rotary file to shape the wood, you can bet he could control it.
Be Well,
Bill
Bill,
I'm not familiar with Bill Brockway's work. I'm sorry if you think I've disparaged his name. I can say this, I've been around the very best craftsman this endeavor has to offer and I can assure you the notion of using rotary burrs to shape stocks would be frowned on by all. Carving tools, rasps, files, scrapers shaves etc. are THE way to go for this sort work. Don't really care what you or Mr. Brockway has to say about it...
Runar,
I admire how resourceful and hard working you are. And I absolutely love the saying you shared. I'll remember that!

Is that how you shape your kit stocks? Each to his own way of doing the work on a rifle. I too have looked at work by Bill Brockway. The end product was very nice regardless of the method used. We all have our way of doing things. Many don't post on ALR because of the immediate criticism if the way they do things isn't PC or HC. I don't use a rotary die grinder and a simple warning of how easy it is to take unwanted wood off a stock in a hurry would ha e been sufficient. Most of us use power tools in one for the other. Tim

I'm not trying to control a rotary cutter by hand when making stocks! Yes, you can take the mindset, "to each his own" or if you take things a little more seriously, you try to learn time tested professional techniques.

Hmmmmm....if you where going that route perhaps use it with a dremel would give a little more control than on a big drill.I think it was more a warning to inexperienced builders that using one of those things could get away from you in a hurry. What ever works for you is the best motto but a smart man listens to advise from folks who been there and done that and also knows his limitations.

Mr Kibler,
It does come across as a disparaging comment when you say you don't care what certain people have to say on a subject.
I typed a whole rant about this but deleted it. This topic is about Runar and his incredible build. Keep up the great job Runar, rotary tool and all.

Yes, a little more patience and kindness might be warranted.
From my perspective... I've spent more than half my life obsessed with this stuff; studying original work, endless experimenting to learn the best methods, studying with those who we admire most, continually refining techniques etc. This is not a hobby for me. It's my profession. This background is very different than the vast majority of those who participate here. Patience can wear thin...
Yes, results are what matter and that's how we judge a person's knowledge and ability when it comes to building these firearms. Let me just say the list of those I admire most is not too large. I respect and listen to what they say. In my view, it would help some on forums like this to follow the same approach a little more.
I don't see this as a place to just pat someone on the back. If something jumps out as being a ridiculous way of going about a task, I'm going to say it and not apologize.

Actually Jim, its refreshing, thank you.

I have to thank Jim Kibler for his honesty...I worked for the Ohio Historical Society for a number of years, and we had some incredible craftsman who worked there...One of them now is making molding planes for a living...And the philosophy was almost consistant to a man...The experience is where its at for the builder...The finished product was the "proving" ground...We all have to make a living, but I for one started building because I loved building, not because I wanted a nice firearm....And I'm not trying to derail this thread, just sayin!....Dan

I am truly inspired by your work Runar ;). You are a craftsman that can make a "silk purse out of a sow's ear". I think after I finish my next few projects I will put those SXS barrels to use that have been lying around for the last 12+ years. I'll leave the rotary tool out of the equation as I am not good with those things ;D. Thanks again and this has been a great picture adventure in SXS builds 8).
-
As to the touch hole liner, Larry Pletcher did testing to prove that low in the pan is fastest. For years the common belief was to have the center-line level with the top of the pan, but this is not the best location. I believe he showed that higher than the center-line was problematic, but I'm not certain. The guidance provided by the book isn't the best in my view.

It's fun watching this gun unfold. But I'm still curious about what you will do with the standing breech to plug transition.

Hi Guys! and thank you for replys!
Taylor, like Scota 4570 says earlyer the remaining rib I cut off the breech section will math perfectly ;) But I have to shims it a litle up to math the barrelrib, looks ok for me.

just a reminder runastav . by soldering the rib to both breech plugs you now make it so that the plugs cannot be removed . This is Why the plugs were made as bill suggested in his book . thus making it so that depending on the plug needing to be remove , the other may have to come out first .
What I did many years ago was to add the small section of rib by screwing it down by coming up from the under side . That way the small section of rib can be removed and the plugs screwed out if need be ..
Nice job so far

Great Job overall on your first double build. You are a talented craftsman there is no doubt and the thing I like best is " you ain't scared of nothing". ;D I like projects that push my limits but this project is up there with the toughest including the swivel breeches. Thank you for the time you spent in documenting this build and sharing it. It just shows that that there is "more than one way to skin a cat" contrary to some opinions. I hope your shotgun performs well and that you let us know how it performs in both function and game getting. ;)
-
Very cool to seem some of the "junk" you used to make this fine gun. Very inspirational to watch develop.
-
Good looking shotgun- Bill Brockway would be proud.
-
Out standing job.You have a lot of skill and talent. Thanks for taking the time to post pictures of youre build.I really enjoyed following you with this build. Now for the for the fun part, range time yahoo.
-
Finish it before you take it out in public! I know you want to shoot it now and yes, it does need to be proofed, but finish it before you start shooting it for real. A shame to take the lady out until she is dressed her best. :)
-
Very nice work, and thank you so much for sharing with us.
-
Runastav: thank you for showing me how you finished up the transition of the standing breech to the barrels. I have really enjoyed this thread and greatly your ability to improvise and come up with well made stuff. I agree - finish it up before you take it out to shoot, if I'm not too late already. Thank you for taking the time to document this build...you're so close to finishing it.
-
I've watched this build from the beginning without making a peep. Looking at the finished gun I can only choke out one word.. amazing.
-
Enjoyed this very much!! - Great build
-
Runastav: It has been a real pleasure watching your project come together. :)
Please don't forget to show us how she looks after her final finish.
-
Thank you all! I am humble :)

This was so cool to watch come together.

Three years ago I wrote the following to Runastav after he built a sea service pistol from materials he took out of his car (or the neighbor's car....or his kitchen....or wherever !) I think it bears repeating after this shotgun build as I am again amazed at the steadfast, steady, intuitive skill displayed as you built this shotgun.
Runastav,
You are obviously descended from the great European craftsmen who have been making incredible utilitarian implements, weapons, buildings, and works of art from metal, wood, and stone for twenty centuries before my country even came into being. I salute you and your wonderful work...and I only wish I could write this to you in Norwegian as well as you can explain your builds in English.
Alle de beste. Nydelig arbeid. (Jeeezz...I hope the Google translator worked!)

Hello Runar
I hope this translates well.
The last time I tried, I said something about a fat man nude on a bicycle juggling rotten tomatoes??
Flott reise og flott haggle! ( great advice and great shotgun !)

I'm like some of the others, I've been watching this from the start but haven't commented. I think it's an awesome gun, I enjoyed watching the amount of craftsmanship and pure problem solving that went into the creation of this gun. I'm anxious to see it with the wood and metal finishes completed. Just beautiful. Thanks.

Sadly none of the original flintlock version are known to exsist but I would think the lock was not much different from other contemporary flintlocks

Runar,
Don't worry about your "bad English". It is MUCH better than the Norwegian most of us CAN'T speak, read or understand.
Do you know a man named Sverre Andre Kvalo in Nordland? I made a 4 screw Alex Henry lock for him a few years ago
and wonder if it ever got used in a long range rifle.
Bob Roller

Bob, bad englisch me nooo hehe! Sverre say hello and it is still going strong he say :)

I have been following this thread for a bit and am really wanting to get into building a shotgun. I do have the book "Recreating the double barrel shotgun" and am reading it now. But I noticed that runastav has a full size drawing of a shotgun. Where can I get one of those? are they available?

Glorious, simply glorious. :)

Thank you guys! mwtimm, the full size drawing was inside the book ;)

Ok Thank You
I looked but maybe I missed it , I will look again tonight.

Hello Runastav,
Really fine work. It is amazing what you can do with a bucket of bolts and scrap steel.
You go to too much work in proofing your barrels.
I load a triple charge of powder and a triple charge of lead, then invite my brother-in-law for a few beers. ::)Then get him to shoot it. :o
If we don't have to go to emergency hospital, the gun is safe ;D
Happy new year to all!
Fred
