Have you sold no. 399 yet? In other words, how many of the last 52 are spoken for?
-
Really is a nice rifle. I like it a heap. Tim

15 of them are spoke for at the moment with about 1/2 dozen guys currently him-hawing.
-
Boy, I sure would like to be the lucky guy that takes that beauty home!!
Hey, Wait a minute.......... ;D
-
Beautiful job as always, Mike. I have a rifle with that same barrel and love it. Shoots good, and carries and holds offhand great in the woods. Someone is gonna be happy!
-
My kind of gun!
Great job Mike.
Gus
-
Now that really cranks my tractor ;D
-
A sleek and slender heavy thumper. I like it too.

I gotta come out of hibernation to tip my hat to that one. That is really, really nice. Just appealing in every way.

I like that one too. Very good color, nice carving and style. Really an attractive rifle.

Excellent Mike!
Far better than the sound of John Denver being strangled.
-
Beautiful rifle Mike. Excelant!! Anything else I could say has already been said.
-

-
yea man, I like everything about it, carving , architecture and especially the color and finish. Great job.
-
Very nice Mike. Really like the border along the butt plate. To me it looks like it just come out the door of a 17th century gun show! Well done!
-
Pretty much what everyone else said, nice going, Mike! Thanks for posting!
Ed
-
Super!
-
Mike,
That's pretty darn nice.
-
Thanks all. Some of the way it looks is thanks to you guys blabbing away your secrets about scrapers lately. Scraping was especially effective in the carving behind the cheek piece. I have dabbled with scraping before but really decided it was time to use the technique more and I endeavored to perceivier on this one. Used a razor blade. Stained with some of my own aniline dye I have been experimenting with. SCREAMIN' canary yellow for a base coat, and some various browns after that. All stirred with my magic woo-woo stick. Probably should tame the brass back a bit, but the owner can take the patina to the level he desires with a dirty BP patch. I don' think you can see from the pics, but the forestock molding is chip carved like the butt molding is. Went for some real folk funk there. Also it's hard to see the barrel engraving which is a viney sort of thing with berries.....more fun folk funk.
Gun only weighs 7 1/2 lbs.
-
Beautiful Mike!! It really has a credible old appearance and the carving is superb.

Thanks. I have never considered myself an outstanding carver. I can get carving on a gun, but not like alot of the guys on here can.
-
Gorgeous rifle Mike! I have a feeling you had fun with that one. Love your architecture and carving and that stock finishing.
dave

This is the kind of different l like ! Looks great...LP

Super nice, Mike. Do you give Christmas presents? ;D
-
Mike,
What happens after #399? Are you going to retire then?
-
Mike,
What happens after #399? Are you going to retire then?
That's the plan. I'll not be taking on any commissioned work at that time. I'll just build what strikes my fancy at the moment at a much less grueling pace.
-
Mike I know everything is on a depends basis but when do you kinda/sorta think that might be?

In 52 more guns..... ;) I build 12-18 guns a year, all depends how elaborate the guns are.
-
I dont see how anyone including you can top this one you just posted but I sure am looking forward to watching you try. Beautiful gun. Keep em coming
-
That check piece has a date with my face tomorrow. Going to play with loads. I'll let y'all know the outcome!
-
That's a gun a fella could look at all day.

Took it out today. Shot the beauty offhand. 75 grains FFFG, .015 spit patched pillow ticking and a .575 round ball. 25 yards distance. Recoil wasn't too awful bad, shots all landed at 3:00 o'clock 9 and 8 ring on the 100 yard 8 ring big bull. Going to bang that rear sight over a tad then look out boys. I must admit that I took way too much time just admiring this fine piece of work. It's a keeper! I'm proud to call Mike a buddy. He's a fine fellow and a brilliant artist.
-
Wow Mr Brooks that's a beautiful piece of work. You should be very pleased with yourself. Thanks for taking the time to post youre work. Its always a treat to see the pieces that you make.
-
That is even prettier than the Carolina 40 cal of yours that I own. JUst barely
I cannot find a number on mine anywhere though. Did you not number all of them?
-
Wonderful rifle. All the elements I like.
-
I'm late to the party, but I want to add my kudos Mike. This rifle has the warm sexy look of an original.
-
Nice work, very beautiful
-
Mike Brooks in one of my favorite contemporary builders. This does take the cake. Every aspect of it fits.

That one will have a number. Check on the trigger plate, if it's not on the barrel it will be there. That .40 is one of my all time favorites, Carlson mounts and a nice piece of wood. Best shooting gun I have ever shot too. I'd love to get the time to make a few more along those lines.
-
THank you
THe number is on the trigger plate. You probably know that Myron copied that furniture from my original Rowan County rifle. I tried to buy the miniature copy he built of the rifle
No luck there.
That and the Allen Martin copy of my Mauger are my two favorite contemporary pieces. Never got lucky enough to get one of EK's
-
Oh, geez, that's nice. It looks old, too!
Mike, you should probably consider quitting your day job and building rifles for a living. ;)
-
Mike Very Very Nice It would go very nice with the pistol I got from you. Best wishes always

Good Golly Mike! That is a beauty.
Glad I got my Carolina Type G a couple months back (Will post pictures soon...) and do not have to get i the line again!
-
Mike you might be heading toward a record on positive comments here! The number of replies is racking up…

That is one of my favorites .No i like them all.Nice work Mike .
-
I'm guessing the owner will be carrying it at the CLA in August. If you guys are there take a look at it in person. I'm glad you all like it so well. I was looking forward to building it as soon as I saw the piece of wood, that and I had free license to do what ever I wanted!

Charlie Burton, FCI Barrels says that I can hang it in the display rack in his booth at CLA Lexington. Look for it there. Feel free to pick it up and play with it, just be sure to put it back!!

To Mike Brooks & Stoner Creek --- BEAUTIFUL RIFLE -- that's all I can say ;).
-
Well I just ran across this, but I gotta say that's a pretty sweet one.
Just loaded with character!
Nice job Mike.
Looks like it should suit you Wayne.

Mike,
That is my favorite so far. Absolutely beautiful.
What gun/guns is it based on?

Pretty much a "Brooksism". The carving behind the cheek piece was based on a earlyish gun from WV. Much of the rest of it is from various early virginia rifles. Some of it is pure whimsy. This one sort of came from the soul over all. Generally happens when I'm given a bunch of parts and told to do what ever I want, with out restriction.

I'm taking this beauty out to shoot the Tanners Station Rifle Frolic at historic Blue Licks Battlefield this weekend. Weather looks perfect. Gun shoots straight. It's all on me!

Wow, three wonderful guns in a row in that link. I am curious, when you started building a hundred years ago ;D , did you build guns that looked like existing pieces or have you always been able to put so much of 'you' into the design and execution?

I think I have pretty much my own style, but can stay inside the period and area I'm building...I hope. I don't know if anyone else can, but I can spot my guns from across the room at a gunshow....don't know if that's good or bad! ;)
-
Finished 9th. Brought home a quart jar of Kentuckys best. 95 grains FFFG and a .575 round ball will ring the gong at 160 yards. That gun makes me look good :D.
-
Way to go! That is one fine rifle. Enjoy that" Kentucky's Best"
-
Try saying fun folk funk 5 times as fast as you can. Excellent job Mike . I like seeing pieces where the maker isn't afraid to be creative and still stay within the possibilities of what could have been done. Good work!!!

I remember that conversation!!!!!!! ;) ;)
-
I really like the rifle especially the color and finish.
