Title: Your favorite muzzleloader???
Post by: Skychief on August 21, 2016, 06:22:43 AM
What muzzleloader is your favorite.

Please just pick one, past or present, and, why it's your favorite.

Also, please mention how you use(d) it.

Best regards, Skychief

My old 3rd model Pat 1853 South Australian marked rifled musket. Been in the family since before I was born, and the first muzzle loader I  ever shot, still shoots fine and hangs over the mantle.

40 caliber Tennessee rifle I built about 20 years ago. Had a Getz 7/8 x 42 inch barrel and would stick em in one hole all day long. Large Siler flint that was the most reliable flintlock I ever had. Sold it to a friend of mine and wish I never sold it.

My .50 Lancaster. Finished some five or six years ago. My first from a Chambers kit.

She shoots dead on at 85 yards, noticeable spread at 150.

My Don Bruton built southern iron mounted rifle. Its my deer gun an keeps my freezer full. Straight shooter hard hitter. Its in my hands 2 an a half months out of a yr so you could say its a faithful companion that has yet to let me down. Its just a plain gun with no carving an the only engraving is the makers initials on the top barrel flat an the rifles name in the sideplate. A .62 cal I call "Samson"

My first big goofy one built  ;) .  Also the only one yet built.   ::)  (TN-54)

It's way too ugly to ever sell, but works great in the woods.  It taught me lots, and I have more to learn.

Edit for a pic:

The one I am shooting. Right now it's my .40 with the 44" GM swamped barrel, cherry stock. Points where I look and hits where I aim. (When I hold right.) Dropped my venison in it's tracks at 75 yards last fall. Not very pretty but she is mine.

54 caliber, gets barrel 44 inch swamped barrel. Rifle is a copy of one owed by Danial Boone. Check of a deer getter.

The one I shoot most is my .45 x 7/8" x 36" GMB Lancaster "plain Jane" full stock - cap lock / flintlock (it can be converted) rifle. I shoot it mostly with the John Bailes flintlock. Really like this rifle so much that I'll probably someday just find a home on another Lancaster stock for the cap lock since I have another .45 GMB setting in my workshop.

My current hunting rifle, it's taken a lot of game in the last 20 years and when it didn't, it wasn't the rifles fault. 32" John Getz barrel, Chambers round face English lock, half stock along English lines, part octagon part round, swings like a shotgun,58 cal. This will be the one until I finish my Jim Carpenter 62 half stock flinter and we will re-evaluate.

My favorite rifle is my current one.  It's my deer rifle and my shootin' match rifle.  38" Rice swamped "B" weight barrel in .50 caliber, Chambers Golden Age lock, Davis DST, built by me.

My 10 bore fowler. 48" barrel beautifully figured  cherrywood stock and crisp carving with silver wire inlay. Made for me by Allan Sandy years ago. New England style with a bit of early French flavor and Allan's own touches.  And it is light weight and balances and carries sweetly.

"Billy Bob", a Hawken half stock with Roller lock and triggers and Large tapered .54 barrel.  I've never named a gun before, but with the major parts coming from a William and a Robert, I couldn't escape it. Lock and breech plug case colored with everything else rust blued and engraved. Lock is engraved "R. Roller Warranted".  Stock is way too red.  It is the only rifle I've ever made myself and is chock full of mistakes, but it taught me a lot about authentic looking Hawken rifles.  It's really hard to make one correctly.  Some day I'll strip it and restain.

It's been my experience that terms like politically correct, polite, or subtle do not apply to a .69 caliber rifle. While I don't know her personally, by reputation the name fits!

LOL - that was a shot at the 200yard gong.  This is the sighting picture before the recoil started. See where the powder smoke is?

140gr. GOEX 2F + .030|" denim patched 482gr. ball. The ramrod has moved out the pipes about 1/2" from the recoil - it is snug in the pipes.

Don't have any pictures of it, but my favorite right now is my Pedersoli Jaeger that a very fine gentleman bored out and rifled from the original .54 with a very fast twist to a slow twist .58 so I can shoot my favorite ammo, round balls.  Before I got this my favorite was a .54 Leman that I build from parts years ago, and I still love it, but it's cap lock and I prefer playing with flintlocks now days, thus the Jaeger.

This is a hard question...I don't think I've yet built my favourite rifle!!  But if I have to pick just one that is alive currently, it is my Jacob Kuntz squirrel rifle.  It has a 44" x .40 cal B weight Rice barrel I bought from someone here on this site.  The stock a blank from Tiger Hunt back east  lock is Chamber's Late Ketland, cast brass hardware much altered, patchbox, rod pipes, nose piece, sights and inlays all hand made by me.  This project took me 5 1/2 months of long days.  But is well researched thanks to Tom Curran and Eric VonAuschwege who provided details from two Kuntz rifles currently displayed at the MET in New York.

It is an amazing rifle to shoot.  It seems to have an uncanny ability to just hang on the target...that long B weight barrel I think.  It weighs 8 pounds, 8 ounces.  It has provided me with winning status year after year at the BC Rendezvous squirrel match.  No recoil and tremendous follow-through...what a combination!  And if I may say so aloud, not hard to look at either.

Though ive owned fine handmade rifles that could head shoot squirrels or drop an elk in its track, my favorite was the #4tt. It was a 4 bore. TT stands for turtle thumper. The story goes that it used to be a swivel gun back when the English ruled India. Officer so and so wanted a gun to shoot kritters. Off the wall it came. The lock was marked "Roses" nothing else. Couldnt find a mold so i drilled holes in a piece of oak with a 7/8" paddle bit, drilled to different depths, filled with lead then split wood. Did this till i got close to 1750 grs. But close enough was close enough. I didnt expect much other than a sore shoulder. 300-350grs FF with a denim patch. Yep. Sore shoulder. But you couldnt have more fun or get more attention at the range with a bazooka! The TT comes from de turtleing Dr Carlucci's pond. He's a dentist in Conyers Ga. Has a lovely cabin on a pond that the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts would camp at. Being full of snappers, and not wanting a scout to step on one we set basket traps but usually only caught the babies. So we would sit on the porch of the cabin with various target rifles and dispatch the demon turtles. One day for giggles i decided to try the 4bore. It hit like a depth charge and rained turtle goo . Fair. Maybe not. Fun. You bet.

Man, what a tough question, but here it goes.  While I shoot (for economy) my iron mounted .36 SMR the most, the one that has taken most of my deer, and a few squirrels, over the years is a plain-Jane Lancaster I've owned for a goodly time.  It's a .45 X 36" X 13/16" barrel with the most reliable large Siler flint lock I've ever used.  It's short, light, with a beautiful flame grain stock and accurate as can be.  In order to give it a rest I've occasionally taken a few others into the bush; but it remains my official go-to deer rifle.

And that's a rubber stopper in the muzzle to indicate a charged bore.

Little Joe, you know your rifles.   I have learned quite a bit about Cornell and his gun-making over the past weeks.  I had a chance to chat and correspond with his son, Marvin.  I truly feel honored to be custodian of such a fine rifle.

Marvin estimated that this rifle was likely made around 1975 or a bit earlier, based on the Douglas barrel.

Being a poor boy with only one long rifle simplifies the problem!  Built by B.J. Habermehl of Central PA:  54 cal. Left handed Early Lancaster with GM Barrel, Tiger Hunt stock, Chambers Lock.  These are old pics when it, bag and horn were new.

I like that Cornell really seemed to have a theme that he mainly adhered to, unless specifically requested by a customer.  His rifles have his own signature characteristics.

If you're ever in central NC, you must let me know so you can burn some powder in it.  And then I can pick your mind with lots of greenhorn muzzleloader questions... ;)

My Mike Miller .48 "Trade rifle." Shoots way better than I can. (But I'm getting better!) He beat Mark Baker with her in a match they shot. I got her from Mike several years ago. We "negotiated" for quite a while till I came up with the funds. I call her "Chucky Girl" after my wife who grew up on the Nolichucky river. Like my wife, its "till death do us part."

My .50 cal. smoothbore. Carved, engraved, and finished by Ron Luckenbill.  I enjoy competing with rifles - and, on rare occasion, winning.

The only one I have…a common production gun-- a Pedersoli ky flintlock.
Here it is in 2 minutes of usage:

My favorite gun is a .65 cal. smooth rifle with a 48" iron double tapered octagon barrel, hand made lock and all other parts.

Well, my guns are not as fancy as even Hanshi's (his "plain-Jane" rifle seems very nice to me!), but my favorite is my NSW Chief's gun (20 ga), 'cause as the Joker once said "you are just so much fun!"

Hessian, that is a .48 caliber?

I'm curious, why not just go with either .45 or .50?

I purchased Mike Millers personal gun. I think he made it in the early 90's. We were talking one day at Friendship and I told him I liked his work but could probably never afford one of his guns. He told me I could pay him while he was building it as his backlog was about 3 years at that time. He asked me to write down everything I wanted in a rifle. When I finished I gave the list to him. He looked at it, grinned and took a nice walnut stocked early trade rifle off the wall.
Try this, he said.
I shouldered it and the silver front site just fell into place. It fit me perfectly.
How about that, he asked?
I told him it was perfect.
He told me it was his gun and he would sell it to me or I could wait until he built another.
I'm not sure why it was a .48 but if I remember correctly one of David Crocketts rifles was a .48. All I know is that it shoots like a laser beam! I had Larry Callihan make me a mold and I run about 200 balls once a year.

Dewey, et. al.  I've not seen a gun on this thread I didn't drool over, promise.

That was a very cool video, yardhunter, and thanks for sharing a very entertaining show of marksmanship.

Spinner, that is a good looking piece.    (Except the lock is on the wrong side... :)  )

Bones.  If I had put the lock on the other side it would be facing the wrong way........ :)

Yup. He called it Malachi. He made it in 1969. Top flat says:"John Dodd Charles Town 1769".
It's a great shooting gun, too.

This one was fun to shoot at Rendezvous this last week.  I managed a 2nd in trap (Quail walk) missing only 1 bird in 10, using 2 3/4 dram 2F and 1oz. shot.
1st place winner of the event, Neil, a man of this forum and also a local guy here in PG, had one less "Tie" than I did.  I shot two slow on one of them, I guess LOL. Neil is a fantastic shot with his 13 bore, Pedersoli Fl;int-lock English pattern scattergun.  I also got a prize for 7th place in a trail walk with it using round balls - missed a bunch of targets, I did. LOL  Taylor won that smooth-bore round  ball event with a perfect score using his long smooth gun, a 20 bore, no missed in 20 shots - aced the
trail and many of the targets were very small and at 30-40 yards.
