I know this site is about "long" rifles, but I just stumbled across this video by accident. At first I thought, "wow, what an ugly little thing".....but, since it is an original 18th century weapon, I watched the whole video. By the end, the little thing sort of grew on me.....The guy doing the video does a good job as well, I think......

Well I'll be! The forerunner of the American canoe gun ;D Who would have thunk it!
Pretty neat.

Its called a Stutzen and made for hunting in the mountains... quite common in European collections... take a look at almost any Hermann-historica.de auction and you will find at least 1-2.
-
Aren't they also referred to as coach guns?
-
coach gun would have been a shotgun...

Oh, ok, I wasn't sure, thanks

Good informative little video.

Nice little rifle! I could see something like that in a future build.... Thanks for posting the video, Dave.

Didn't we have something similar called a buggy rifle?
That YouTube channel is pretty interesting for European guns.

So maybe a few we're made here. Without a patch box. Just a thought. I know I like the one I made. Sweet handling little brush gun. Very interesting video food for thought?

That gun is much later than he claims .It's more like 1800-1815 or so. I'd put a tighter patch/ball combo in it as it probably has a real fast twist. Nifty little gun, fast ignition too.

I have pictures of wheelock rifles of this size... These had their use in Europe...

I'm planning on building a similar one as I have an old Lg. Cal 12" Barrel and a nice Block of wood.
The wood is too short for anything else. It will be my first build .

I have already had a call today from a client who wants one of these rifles. Is anyone out there currently making a .62 barrel similar to this one?

I laughed out loud at the Google translation for that first matchlock:
"Shotguns match- and Radschloss.
Lot No. 28 Light Radschloss spigot, rubber in Kulmbach, dated 1649 Five-edged "pork chops" -Lauf with smooth bore in caliber 7 mm. In addition to the chamber defeated signature "Benedict rubber 1649". Straight Radschloss with half interior wheel and spring-loaded pan cover. Hood with adjustable trigger. Lightly Walnut full with horn nose. Chance dot inlays from leg and dark horn. Pistons with piston compartment. Fine curved iron trigger guard, original ramrod with horn tip. Length 72 cm. Benedict rubber, demonstrated as a gunsmith in Kulmbach in 1628 - 1651. See heeled, S. 472nd."
Five edge "pork chops" sound lip smack'n!

Hoyt is making me a 24" in .58, he'll make you anything you want.

Thanks Dave - good video!
I agree - his patched ball combination needed help, but considering all, he did quite well with it.

Very cool gun. Someone took great care of it too.
Thanks for the video.
