For a .54 a "C" weight, I believe, is about the lightest you can get; that will be very light is available.  A "D" weight is often recommended and would be just a little heavier.

I just recently bought a Chambers Issac Haines kit in 54cal, seems pretty light with that c profile Rice barrel.

A .54 in 'c' weight will handle and carry really nice.  There will be some bsrrel whip off the bench, though.  Shouldering it for offhand shots will be a shear joy.

There are at least two C weight barrels, a 38" and a 44" in Chambers Lancaster style kits. Both balance well for me but the 38" is a little lighter and handier in the woods.

I built a John Schreit around a C-weight Rice transition profile (38") in .54 with a rather heavy butt piece. It weighs 8.4 lbs and balances about 3" forward of the lock. Very handy in the woods.

If you want light, C weight in an Oct/Round swamped profile.  That round front section really shaves weight and makes a nice carrying gun for hunting.

I built a rifle with a C weight .54 cal. 38" Colrane barrel some 15 years ago. It gets a lot of use as it's my main deer rifle. The rifle is well balanced and fairly light. I do all my load testing off the bench and I've never noticed any barrel whip off a bench or otherwise. I wouldn't know how to recognize barrel whip in a barrel this stout anyway. It's just a good handling, good shooting barrel and will cut one big hole when I do my part. You could build a poor boy with this barrel and it would be even lighter.

My deer rifle is C- 54x42 and is plenty doggone accurate.  I don't care about harmonicas, just powder it up until it shoots.  ;D

I have a Chambers .54 Early Lancaster with a 44" barrel and it's more accurate than I am and balances beautifully.

Taylor's Virginia with a C weight RICE .50 is perfect weight and hold for an offhand rifle.  A "C" in .54 would be as light for a hunting rifle in a swamped barrel as I'd like.  A "D" would make a better trail walk rifle. imho, of course.
