Title: North Carolina Style Horn W/Two Bands
Post by: Tim Crosby on July 18, 2017, 03:40:14 PM
This one is about 15" around the outside curve and 11 1/2" tip to tip. The Walnut butt is about 2 1/2", hollowed out about 3/4s its length, it is held in by 8 wooden pegs. The two part antler tip is pinned together with 3 wooden pegs and to the horn with 3 more. The tip cracked while I was fitting the stopper so I reinforced it with a piece of Brass tube. The bands were heated and pressed on, no pins, we'll see how that goes. Body was scraped and colored with Lt Brown leather dye then boiled, followed by Brown shoe polish and buffing.

Nice horn Tim.  I really like the color contrast between the base plug and the horn.  The brass collar is a nice addition.  I love it when a craftsman can work an anomaly into a pleasing feature.

There is a lot to like there Tim.  That translucent color is really cool.  You boiled the horn AFTER you dyed it?  Did you use Lincoln's or Fiebings, or another?  I'll pick your brain in Lexington.  :-)

I wanted/am hoping that boiling the horn after color with set the stain better, as in open the pours and get it in rather than on the horn, first try at this. It was an oil based Fiebings.
