This is a gun I've been working on for a while in my spare time, figured i'd finish it up before starting the next build. Its based on an original in Ivey's book. 42" rice 54 cal barrel , chambers lock, maple stock and hand made hardware. The bottom pic shows the color more accurately than the others. This rifle is going to be put to use soon on some wild hogs and i'm lookin foward to the hunting pics.

Very nice! VERY NICE! The color is great, simple but elegant carving, nail in the heel to protect it. What else could a man want??

Keep up the good work Joe. I like those big boys.
-
Looks pretty good Joe. Did you let those two boys help build it?
Brice
-
Joe that is another nice looking rifle you built
-
Great job Joe.
-
Thanks guys. Yes Brice, they built it while i sat in my rocking chair drinking my tea. I dont build them i just take the orders. The one holding the rifle is the journeyman smith and the short mean lookin one is the apprentice.

I knew it all along. The tall one gives the orders an the short one looks to be the enforcer. I bet he dont take any lip from anyone

Really enjoyed seeing this rifle and even showed it to my wife. She is not a gun person but does appreciate longrifles well done for their beauty of form.
-
I'd say you passed the test sir. On an unadorned rifle, you have no bling to divert the eye. You have to get the basics right. Well done. Best wishes, Marc

Everybody get their note books out and write that down. Probably the most important thing I've read on this forum in a year.

Just saw this..., that's a very well done rifle. Superb simplicity. Great job, Joe, and thanks for sharing.

The rifle made it to its new home in south Alabama this morning. It actually looks better in hand than it does in the pictures. Joe did a fine job of recreating #194 in William Ivey's book on North Carolina rifles. The rifle as you can tell in the photographs is very clean and well shaped. The architecture is spot on and flows very well. I like it a lot. I highly recommend Joe's work. I'll let you know how it shoots and maybe next month (when it cools down) I can post a picture of a big hog taken with the rifle. Which by the way now carries the name "Timber Rattler". Tim Cosby

Fine looking rifle, Joe. Thanks for posting. Bob
-
Mr Cosby sir, I am glad you are the recipient of this fine rifle. :-) Get some good use out of it. Two thumbs up. God Bless, Marc
-
Thanks for putting a # on it, I looked through a couple times and couldn't find it, pages stuck together.
A fine looking rifle, new and old, I like simple, makes me want to jump back in.

Don't hesitate you need to jump back in a enjoy the fun. It is still a lot of fun and one of these plain no nonsense work rifles will get the job done. Tim Cosby (no r)

Great looking rifle. Good luck on the hog hunt Tim.
-
Ted thanks for the compliment on the rifle. I'm planning on shooting it this afternoon and dialing it in if necessary. You know you're welcome to come down for a hog hunt. Tim

Now the truth is out. All those knives we thought Joe was forging are being done by his apprentice. Here he is going to work on a blade saying "Get out of here Dad. I've got to get to work!!"

Hopefully he has the same intrest when hes actually big enough to do it, by then he'll probably just want to play video games.

He won't play those blasted games if his Pop doesn't buy them for him! ;) I wouldn't allow those things in my house. ( games ....OR kids!)

Follow up on this rifle. Early this morning it live up to its general category of hog rifle. Not the big old boar hog I was hunting but one of his offspring. It will be some fine eating as it is just the right size for the smoker about50/60#. Rifle had been loaded six or seven days. It still went off faster than I could flinch which really helps. Thanks Joe for a fine hunting rifle. Tim

Nice bacon!
-
Be some good eating for Father's Day. Wally Nut rifle is up next.
-
Enjoyed seeing more of Joe’s fine work. That should be right at home in Alabama slaying hawgs. I need to get Ivy’s book. Lean and mean like our forebearers who toted and used them.
-
An excellent example of the fact that a rifle doesn't have to be fancy to be great looking. Good architecture, fit and finish is what makes the rifle.
-
That truly is an elegant rifle; the kind I like.

An now a proven meat getter which is what Joes efforts was meant for. Should be some good eats Tim
-
I love the square nail used as a "wear patch" on this rifle! Two thumbs up.
-
Beautiful Rifle!!
-
That is a fine rifle. I could find no fault. I really like the job you did on the triggerguard, the side plate positioning, and the side panels. The little bit of relief carving and butt stock moulding are nice touches.
-
I must have missed this one when it was originally post it.
Great looking rifle!
Also an excellent example that beauty doesn't necessarily mean lots of carving and engraving.
Beginners take note... ;)
