After seeing the fine work of artist Maryellen Pratt, I became inspired to try my hand at making my own hunting pouch. My efforts are very simple, because I don't have much confidence yet in what I'm doing. However, I am very pleased with the results, and welcome critique.
I started with a paw paw that I'd shot and skinned. I used almost the whole hide, except that part where the bullet passed through. Noteworthy is that this is all ONE PIECE, including the strap. I'm pretty proud of that.
To complete the set, I'm asking Ian Pratt to build me a small rifle and knife to go with the bag.

What's a paw paw? The ones in my back yard grow on trees.

It might be the right size for those rifles that Ardie Luke has been show casing on this forum. Needs a horn and knife though. ;D :)

Those little critters are also delicious. Just make sure it's dead before you approach too closely; they can be vicious!

I like the ink work on the flap. It's those kind of small details that really make it. ;)

Yea, the paw paw is a fruit. Native to the central US. Pudding apple. They are truly delicious. they taste like a blend of pineapple, mango, citrus, with the consistency of pudding.

And a hint of banana flavor.

....and banana! Especially as it gets ripe.

I thought for sure that a zucchini would have been the donor for the pouch! I've seen some of Acer's crop, and some of them would be big enough to make a full-sized bag. The other good thing about zucchini is that no shots need to be fired. You just have to sneak up on them and you're in business.

As I progress, I will get a zucchini made into pouch. I think will have to make a separate strap for it, as the zucchini hide is pretty stiff. Thanks for the encouragement, Dave!

The only way I can get a paw paw would be to shoot the thieving possums. They can wipe out a paw paw population over night. Good shot on that one. What caliber did you use to take it?

Well done sir. I prefer a small shot bag myself. Only question I have is where are you getting paw paws in the northeast???

The reason I asked my dumb question about what's a paw paw, is that mine rot almost instantly after they get ripe. At what stage did you harvest that one to be able to dry it out enough to work with?

Being from the Deep South, paw paws were a treat often found while we were picking blackberries for mama to make jelly with. To me, they taste like bananas.

The paw paw came from Ohio, Jackson County. Picked just before ripe, then shot in the head to preserve the skin, flesh scraped out and consumed, then the skin cut and shaped before it started drying.

Did you have to brain tan the paw paw hide? Do you think that will work on the thick zucchini skin?

That brand on the flap is from one of my trees...you got some 'splainin to do buddy.

It don't take brains to tan a paw paw hide, just raw courage. They are rough little critters, especially when ripe.
Sorry to draw attention away from legitimate accoutrements. I also like James Rogers bags better than mine.
(That wasn't an explanation, but an apology with an afterthought. I'll work on the explanation idea.)

Nice craftsmanship and all, and I hate to be the one to nitpick, but is a heart-shaped bag really historically correct for an early one-piece foldover paw paw? I would have expected a square bottom... ;)
