Title: Flat horn
Post by: Gun Butcher on October 24, 2017, 01:54:55 AM
Managed to finish this little flat horn today. It 3/4" thick, 2 1/2 " wide at the base , and about 8" tall. Cherry base and top with a threaded antler tip.
Thanks for looking

Ron

What size tap and die did you use to cut the threads?

On these small horns I usually use a 1/2-13 tap and die. I always try to use the biggest size that I can but the size of the horn dictates what you can get away with.

That some very fine work. I have made two flat horns, my son has one , and the other went a friend . I never learnt to do scrimshaw, that did not look a chicken scratched  it.

Hey you old road dog it's good to hear from you. If I am doing any good at all you are one of the reasons. You always gave me good feedback and gave me options for cleaning things up.
Take care of yourself and keep the shiny side up.

As mentioned on another site, that is  a really fine piece of work.  There is just enough engraving to make it look right.  I, on the other hand, have a tendency to overwork engraving.

By the way, Ron, a couple of years ago a package from you arrived at this address containing one of your horn cups.  My wife has a china cabinet full of her fine china and crystal.  Low and behold, your horn cup has taken up residence among all of that highbrow foo foo and is sitting front and center at eye level.

Curtis I am positive that that cup is in much better company than it ever expected to be.
I am honored kind sir.

A very nice job on the horn!

Squashing a horn can be very nerve-wracking!  LOl!!
I made a flattened one out of copper one time;  Fell out of a tree and landed on it.   ;)
