Title: Jackware Canteen
Post by: Black Hand on February 10, 2018, 06:16:08 PM
Top-grain vegetable-tan, 2-3mm thick with an inserted round bottom so it will stand upright. Fully impregnated with beeswax and holds ~32oz of water.

Very nicely made, and now I have seen it, I do recognise the type!

V good stitching.

Did you boil the leather B-H?

Wooden bottom;
Is it nailed on?  I see stitching, so wondered if the base has a collar or narrower section running around its girth, that the leather is pulled into tightly.  ?

It looks  great!  Congrats on such an unusual build.

Richard.

Very nice work Black Hand, can you post a pic of the bottom?

Did you use sand or rice to make the bulge in the leather?

Leather is not boiled and the neck has an inserted wooden collar to allow for spout support and good seal with a cork. The bottom is stitched in place and is merely a circle of leather inserted between the 2 side pieces after sewing the body together. Double row of linen stitches in the body, saddle-stitched and holes punched with an awl. When assembled, the leather is wet and the cavity filled to mold the final shape.

I've since made 8-10 more for friends who wanted a light, tough canteen to carry on the trail. Each comes out a little different as I've not quite been able to replicate the shape of the prototype above, which I still carry.

That is a nice looking canteen, I have never seen one made that way.  There used to be a man locally that made leather canteens for the horse soldier reenactors., but his were round, like a stack of pancakes.  They looked like the old Boy Scout canteens.
