Title: Early 18th Century French Gunmaker - PALAN
Post by: smart dog on July 04, 2018, 09:28:27 PM
Hi folks,
If any of you have a copy of Neue Stockel or other resource, could you look up a French (likely) gunmaker named PALAN who may have worked during the first half of the 18th century.  I would appreciate any information and dates.  It is the name on the lock of the Jonathan Hawkes fowler at the Memorial Museum in Deerfield MA. The cherry-stocked gun likely was made in the Connecticut River Valley using older French parts including the 57" barrel.  I will post photos of this gun in a separate thread.  Thanks for any help.

I'm afraid he's not listed in Stockel.

Thanks Joe.  Did you see the thread in which I posted photos of the fowler? I would appreciate your opinion of it relative to maker and date.

Dave,

You have seen this lock up close, but I must ask if it is indeed an "N" at the end of the name?
I wondered if it was a "U" that had received a blow and made to look like an N.  I Thought I could see the right side of a U.....

The lock Does appear Very mid 18th C to me.

It is a pity also that some of the Very nice furniture cannot be removed, as this is often marked with the maker when iron/steel is used.
One family so involved were the Brunons, of St Etienne.  They made high end iron/steel gun mounts.
Jean Francois (1737-1784) would be a possibility.
