What do you guys have faith in to protect your bores if you don't plan to shoot for a few weeks or months?
Thanks for sharing, Skychief

Vaseline, been useing it for years in my black powder guns . it stays put, chris popp.

I never heard that one before. Do you just run a patch with vaseline down the barrel after you are done cleaning?
I would be worried about getting so much down the barrel that it would block the nipple or touch hole inside the barrel.
Touch hole is an easy fix, but some percussion guns have some twists and turns to get down to the powder, at least I think I was told that by someone.

WD40.
-
Ballistol.
-
Remington Wonder Lube with Teflon,,or spray silicone Spray a patch run it down the barrel Then dry patch and good to go.
-
Mobil 1 synthetic oil, 30 weight.
Mark

I'm with Mark, but use Castrol SynTec. Both work equally well, easy to clean out quickly when needed.
-
G96 and Liquid Film.
Very happy with both.

Me too. Made by Birchwood Casey I think.

Barricade (ex-Sheath) after soothing at the range. Bear grease at Rendezvous.
-
3-in-1 oil for 50+ years now with no problems. If the firearm won't be shot for a while I lather the oil on, if not then a thin coating will do. Always run a clean patch down the bore to remove excess oil before loading.

after using many, I now use Fluid Film inside and out.
-
I prefer oil, the one that is handy.
I'd use bear grease if I could get more, but I have to stretch my little supply. These modern guys that go bear hunting never seem to understand my desire to get bear fat from 'em.
-
Ballistol, 3 in 1 oil, 30 or 20 or 10 weight oil of any brand, VVL-800. All will work. The important part I have found is if the rifle will not be used within a few weeks, return to the bore a day or two after cleaning and wipe it dry with clean patches, then re-oil. I have rifles with excellent bores that have not been required oiling in over three years using this method. No problems.
INote that flipping a patch over and reusing it only serves to put the dirt/water your patch removed onto your jag. That dirt/water is then deposited on the clean side of your second patch. When you flip the second patch over, that dirt/water is deposited back into your bore. Patches are cheap, barrels are not.

Been using Barricade, formerly called Sheath, for 25 years with complete satisfaction.

RIG and recently, CLP and then a recheck and another dose of CLP. Fresh patch each time!
-
Martin S. I put a thin coat in the bore. dab vasiline on patch, then put on the jag. push down the bore, if a flat breech , like a flintlock , I dab a small glob on the end of the patch while on the jag. push it down. this makes sure you get to the corners of the breech. I store my gun,s butt down, that way I don't have to worry about it running out the breech end. it stays put. I also use it to lube my lock insides. I also use it on my revolver's . I wipe it out of my rifles before I shoot. just one patch, the revolvers I just load powder and ball and shoot. remember thin coat, chris popp.
-
I use CLP in the aersol can and RIG grease.
-
Rig in the bore and to wipe down the outside of the barrel and lock with it as well. It's great stuff.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm going traditional very soon with a pork lard and beeswax mix.
Best regards, Skychief.

WD-40 for short term, Break Free Collector (long term storage preservative developed for the military) stood up muzzle down in safe. Run a patch with denatured alcohol down bore before shooting.
-
Speaking of denatured alcohol, where are you guys buying it? I've been to two China Marts and they say they don't carry it.

I used Jim Chamber's heavy oil for years with no problems. Then it seemed I started cleaning my rifles at the house instead of the shop (Where the Chambers oil was kept) so I'd use what ever was handy, mostly Remoil. Never had a problem with that either. I think any good oil will do. I lube my locks with synthetic motor oil, never thought about using it for the bore.....

I agree, 3-in-1 Oil is what I was taught to use by my Grandfather and my Father and it has never let me down. With black powder, clean with room temp water, wipe dry and apply the oil.

fluid film is also called woolwax-a lanolin product from sheep wool-natural and attacks nothing. It was developed as a rust inhibitor for offshore oil platforms and ships in salt water. I love the stuff.
-
Break free CLP, on the lock, in the bore, on the outside of the barrel, on the wood.
-
I like to lightly coat down the bore with Break-Free. Then wipe exterior, let set overnight and wipe it off. Great protection. As for denatured, I got the last at Tractor Supply. (Used a fifty-fifty mix with glyceren/denatured alcohol to "tan" a snake skin.)

I also use Fluid Film. The local chain auto parts probably has some. My general purpose oil is ATF with anhydrous Lanolin melted in it to thicken a bit. It also works very well to keep the rust away as well as being an excellent general purpose lube.

Look in the paint department.

I know lanolin. Never knew it was called fluid film.
The kind I use is just 100% wool squeezins- sold for cosmetic/skin use, and pre-dates oil platforms. I think Lanolin goes back as far as sheep, metal, and salt. I've not used it that for metal protection, but it's great for fingers and dry air-the best.

...
OR, when you REALLY GOTTA have denatured alcohol, go to the spirits store and ask for their highest proof of all- usually 190 for Everclear or something similar. And then add some toxic (more toxic) chemicals to it. Then you have denatured your own alcohol.
But of course it works in place of hardware store denatured just the same without denaturing it.
-
Skychief, I found denatured alcohol in the paint department at Walmart............robin
-
Thanks all. I found some at the local hardware pusher. Used it today in fact.
Best regards, Skychief.
PS, I made some beeswax/lard cakes and used it as patch lube and ran some downbore after cleaning and drying today. Will see how that goes. The lube shot great by the way. I'm looking forward to the results it gives as a rust preventative. Thanks again.

First muzzleloader was a acquired in the early 1970s. This was after shooting a number of muzzleloaders previously. Many were originals. My ‘mentor’, who owed and shot multiple originals thought WD40 was the way to go for bore protection. Since then, the only rust I have seen/experienced involved muzzleloaders not treated with WD40. Might be the an exception, but I am sold. Lived in North Carolina since early 90s. No rust problems in more muzzleloaders bores than I can count.
For full disclosure, can NOT recommend WD40 for any mechanical device, say for example a lock or bolt from a modern style rifle. The stuff gunks up the mechanical device. A white frosty residue. Below freezing your are screwed. Just my opinion.
-
WD-40 is what made me change to CLP. Kept getting rust......and I live in Arizona.
-
Barricade for me also. I wipe the whole gun down with it, inside and out.
-
WD-40: according to the internet it doesn't work, but my experience has been different. Thicker oil tends to stick in bore and foul grooves quickly. Ok in a shotgun, though.
-
Whatever is handy, but ATF is good.
-
Anutha (Boston speak ... ) fan of Barricade here! NEVER had an issue ...
-
One of the best and most comprehensive tests of gun care and other commercial products for rust prevention, etc. Long but very informative.

Almost anything works if you clean perfectly first and if you give a touchup fairly frequently, and the gun is stored in good conditions. The test is an imperfect cleaning job, poor conditions like tripping and camping with your gun after firing, or long term storage without attention. Fluid film is my current favorite for these reasons, besides it's cheap!

If there's anything better than "Barricade" or maybe BreakFree CLP, I haven't found it.
-
This question is like asking about your favorite patch lube--lots of answers ---all right. Ken Brisien, the famous barrel maker used to store his barrels full of 30 wt motor oil.

If you read the comparison test that davec2 mentioned you'll see that Barricade and BreakFree CLP aren't even in the same room with the top five.
However they are apparently working well enough for what you use them for. :-\
-
thanks for that comparison article. I wonder if black powder fouling on the metal would make a different result? Muzzel blasts had a good article on this subject--I think.

Yea Turtle. I think I have that article somewhere. If I ever find it I'll post it. :-\

Anyone use Bore Butter from TC? A friend of mine recommended it but I haven't used it yet. I use Ballistol.
-
Don't waste your money on TC bore butter. I threw mine away years ago. Unless you are having issues with the ballistol stick with that.

I use this inside and outside the barrel. Not for lube but just for rust prevention. Never rust.
