Hoyt full round tapered 53 1/4" 20 bore barrel, 1 1/8" at the breech. Chambers early Ketland lock. Cherry stock stained with Ferric Nitrate then rubbed back with finish and a scotch brite pad. I soldered and riveted the trigger guard master together then had it sand cast. This is a copy of NE 17 in Grinslade's book, long wristed and short butted just like the original. Weighs 8 1/2 lbs.
Looks like I cut the full length of the barrel out of the picture by about 4".... ::)

Yep, real black. I expected that though, done it many times before.

I love it. It is one of the nicest NE fowlers I've ever seen. I like the architecture, the hardware, the color and finish, everything. Mike, when you rub back the ferric nitrate what do you use? I would really want to try your method on some cherry scrap but I've found that rubbing back ferric nitrate stain seems to take a lot of work. On maple, after blushing the stain, I've tried to rub the color back at the wrist and other areas on some of my guns with Scotch Bright pads but I rub and rub and only make a small dent in the color. I've started believing that you guys who do this wonderful color aging have forearms like Popeye. Again Mike, a great gun and I hope the eventual owner realizes he has an historically correct masterpiece.

My pads are maroon in color, probably more course than a lot of guys use. Cuts quick. I use what ever finish I'm using as a lube while I'm scrubbing. It is a lot of work BTW...It kills my arthritic shoulders. I've learned to work both right and left handed while rubbing this stuff back. And yes, the owner has seen this thread and says I nailed it, just what he expected, which always makes me happy. :) It hits the road tomorrow.

I was thinking more like a punt gun, Six inches of powder and 12 of something that resembles shot, clamped to the bow of a skiff or used with a gun Bearer :)
In all seriousness it is a Great looking gun.

That isn't a punt gun... it's a Chinese jingal. The photo is in the Library of Congress. It was a souvenir brought back from the Boxer Rebellion.

Beautiful gun for sure.I assume standing on a stump or the lowered tailgate of a truck
to load it. The rifle credited to Daniel Boone in out art museum has a tapered and flared
barrel 51" long and it handles easily and it's 45 caliber and is easy to shoulder and aim
in spite of the length.
