Title: Jacob Kuntz Swivel Rifle - Philadelphia
Post by: fundukj on December 31, 2018, 10:29:26 PM
I bought this beautifully ornate swivel rifle earlier this year from a friend and ALR member.  It is profusely engraved and signed on both sides of the receiver (name on one side and town on the other). Also, it has a magnificent piece of wood (buttstock) and it is in good condition, overall. However, it was rebarreled and shot in competition years ago by renowned shooter and builder Roy Vail. I'm sure the fore stock panels and the hardware on them were replaced at the same time. The work is excellent. I have not shot this rifle, yet. Please enjoy the pictures and thanks for looking. John

Mr. Kuntz had no problems stepping outside the box!  I love his work.  Wonderful rifle...thanks for showing us.

John, How is his name spelled on the lock? I have seen him spelling it “Kunz” on his guns, but “Kuntz" seems to be on documents and in most references to him.

Do you or any others understand this discrepancy?

Hi Bill: This one is signed, "J. KUNZ" but I've seen it both ways, also.

Beautiful work!
Hadn't thought about it until I saw that muzzle picture, but straight octagonal barrels would sure help to get them both shooting to the same spot.

Regulating the barrels to shoot to the same POA should not have been a problem, since each barrel carries its own set of sights,  This set up gives you the opportunity to sight each barrel in for a different distance....With such a set up you have a convenient excuse for shooting over or under....

"but straight octagonal barrels would sure help to get them both shooting to the same spot."

With individual sights one each barrel, why wouldn't they shoot "to the same spot"?

I think my brain abandoned me!
That is a very nice rifle in all respects, and I also have wondered about the different spellings of the name.

I used to not care for Kuntz work but after a lot of study I have come to appreciate what an artist the man was. It seems there wasn't anything the man couldn't or wouldn't do.

He's a great example for those contemporary builders who just have to make highly decorated rifles.

The muzzle picture is very interesting indeed. Looks like GM barrels and in excellent shape.
Catch the light reflection on that land.
