Just weighed my Tulle de Chasse .62 cal
..came up with 8.3 lbs. Was wondering if that was some what correct...or not. Has a 42 inch Getz barrel . What do most other Tulles weigh ? Thanks

I built one with a 44 inch 16 bore barrel that only weighs 6 1/4 pounds.

Forgot to mention.....fiddle Maple on mine..if that makes a difference.

Nessmuck, you made me curious so I weighed my maple stocked Tulle de Chasse .62 cal 42" barrel, with rear sight, and it weighs 8.4 pounds.

Depends on the piece of wood. Wood is in no way consistent.

According to the Wood Database, the density of Black Walnut is 38 pounds per cubic foot, and Sugar Maple is 44 pounds per cubic foot. That's about 16% difference. These densities are of course averages, and the is considerable variation as Mike points out.

The originals weigh about 6lbs.
It is my understanding, the originals had much lighter barrels than what are available today unless you get a custom contoured barrel from someone like Bobby Hoyt.

That's a fact. Original barrels weighed about 3lbs.

According to the Wood Database, the density of Black Walnut is 38 pounds per cubic foot, and Sugar Maple is 44 pounds per cubic foot. That's about 16% difference. These densities are of course averages, and the is considerable variation as Mike points out.
I believe red maple is about the same weight as walnut. I find it about the same “hardness” as walnut as well.

I have noticed that different brand .62 fowler barrel vary a lot in thickness. Who makes the thinnest/lightest? I have a customer who wants a light fowler.

Not sure they sell their barrels to builders, but a Caywood 62 is as trim as I’ve seen, witha tapered breech section and then very thin at the muzzle.

Talk with Jason at Rice barrels he is making some thin walled fowler barrels out of 4140.

John Getz is making a copy of a Ravenshear oct to round barrel. not sure how thin the walls are at the muzzle, but its a nice looking barrel. It weighs in at about 3.5 lbs.

That is really thick, I'd consider that a "buck & ball" barrel rather than a fowling barrel. Original fowling gun and trade gun barrels were much thinner.

I have a Getz .62 barrel in my Frenchy. I weighed it a long time ago it weighs over 8.5 lbs. Shoots ball nicely. Hard to get started on birds. not so much for the wight but for how forward the wight is. Got a Curly Gostomsky barrel in a piece of wood. I expect it to be a much livelier gun for birds. It is very thin at the muzzle.
