Thanks to a tip from a member here on ALR, I was able to buy this beautiful rifle by Art Holly. It's worth sharing.

What a great rifle in, every aspect.

Love the whole rifle - great piece of wood, great craftsmanship.
Best looking "Man in the Moon" I recall seeing!

Awesome rifle. The discoloration on the bottom makes me imagine it hanging above the mantle.

or: leaning in the corner (for many years, with sun shining on the underside of the cheek piece. Appears chromium trioxide green, to me.
Interesting that most of this discolouration is under the cheek piece and not on it's belly as well.

I thought the same thing. My first inclination was that the surface area and angle of the cheek piece would heat up more than the rest of the more horizontal areas as it leaned foreword on its hooks over the fireplace but I’m not so sure that’s the case. I think you might be right. 50 years and more in the same corner, by the front door, in the same position, to catch the morning sun every day. The porch roof might’ve shaded all but the bottom half, once the sun made it above the trees. Or any of a million things, but I do like that one.

Fine looking Rifle. Any idea of where the builder was from? My wife has kin named Holly from near Jasper Alabama . Thanks in advance

Michigan.

That’s a very nice rifle. That’s for showing it

Art was a very well known Michigan builder. Just one heck of a good guy. He was very good friends with Pa Keeler. Oldtravler

Art was from the Lansing area of Michigan. Jack Gee, who taught myself and others in the Mich. Longriflesmiths Guild, was taught by Art and had some of his guns around to look at. That is the nicest Holly rifle I have seen!
-
Beautiful rifle! I'm not familiar with this maker. When did he work? The rifle was obviously not built recently...
-
This rifle was built around 1970, according to the original owner's family.

Hi John! Very nice Holly rifle! Here are a couple pics of a pair of my Art Holly rifles.

Fantastic, Joel. I especially like the top one!
-
Hey Joel is that the original finish on those two rifles ? the two that I owned had a green tint from not deluting the aqua fortes . wish I had them back . he signed the ones I owned using a chisel and hammer on the barrel flat.
-
Hi Eric! Yes, both of my Holly rifles retain their original finish. I have seen a few Holly's where Art must have used Chromium Trioxide to finish them. That stuff has a reputation for acquiring a green tint over time.
