Post by: hortonstn on September 11, 2019, 04:08:34 AM
Anyone seen any plans or how to build a round bottomed wood plan for cutting around cheekpiece?

Isn't gun making specific, but here is a bull nose plane I need to restore that could probably be modified to work very easily.

I bought a wooden scrub plane from Lee Valley about 6 years ago... it works great for that area of the stock.
Google scrub plane and I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like.

Here's one on youtube, looks a bit big but probably could adapt it to whatever. I bought a couple different sizes at CLA I think his last  name was Snyder.

I have two.  One I modified for ramrod grooves, the other I use for concaving cheek pieces.

I bought two from Tom Snyder, one for roughing out a barrel channel and one for roughing out a ramrod groove. Google Snyder’s Custom Guns and you should find his contact info. He’s a great guy to deal with.

I can’t see how a plane does this job well if you mean defining a cheekpiece after the buttstock is rough shaped.  Is this a rounded cheekpiece? Most rough in with a gouge and finish up with rasps then scrapers or sanding.

Go to YOUTUBE then find Paul Sellers web sight - he shows how to make a low budget molding plane. You can modify the style he shows to what you want but like Don said a wood rasp will do the job ;).

Unless you're just set on making one, I'd second contacting Tom Snyder.  He makes quite assortment that are well made and reasonably priced.
