First time I’ve ever hand cut dovetails. I left out the half tails. Figued it wasn’t a drawer getting pulled on and it’s only decoration. I’m making the box and then cutting along the clued lid after completing it. I didn’t realize the work that goes into these things.

Mike, that’s coming along nicely. One thing about the muzzleloader hobby, there is ALWAYS something else to make! I love it!

Mike are you using one of those gizmoes to mark the angle of the dovetail? Looks like your coming along pretty good so far.

I made one like the wooden one that’s 8/1 but I also bought one like the black one. They sent two, so if you’d like one, send me your address. Supposedly cutting tails first makes it easier. It wasn’t too hard and the experience of inletting gun stuff helps a lot.

:o :o :o... Well done, Mike,... !!! ... Fine piece of maple you're using too,... when I see great stripes, I always think,..."what a waste of good gunstock wood,... !!! ... (I think that about fiddles, too,...!!!)... However, ...Tiger-maple is pretty on any wood project,... Congrats, and post progress,... CCF

It’s a little bit closer. I love the transition from plain wood to iron nitrate and then BAM!! I still have the tray and hardware to go.

You're going to make a great blacksmith.
-
I have so many hands in the fire right now with rifles, bags, horns, etc. I don’t know if I’m coming or going. Haha. I guess it’s keeping me off the streets. ;D I am interested in blacksmithing.

Just don't miss any important things like grandbaby births. ;D

1st ones at that. I had to fit that trip to Stoner Creek in somehow. I found a couple hour slot and ran with it. ;D

Look'n good Mike. Everything about the culture is addictive, somewhere along the line you have to give everything a try.

That is beautiful. Just beautiful. How much would shipping be to my house? 🙂

Mike, you'll be making period furniture before ya know it... ;) That is certainly a loud piece of lumber...when I get my current pile of projects whittled down I need to search out a few boards...I think I'm gonna build a few dulcimers...

Woodworking is fun but I'm finding out that it takes some space. There's too much sawdust produced to work in my garage. I have dust everywhere and I worry about clogging up the filter in my a/c and heating unit. One of these days, I'll have a building dedicated to my hobbies!

A question; did you make the box with Four pieces and then cut the top section off? I find that makes it easier and a good match. I usually make the box, with top and bottom and then separate them.
Nice looking box.

That’s exactly how I did it. The boards are 6” and I added a 2 1/4” lid. Then I enclosed the entire box and cut on the 2 1/4” line to make the lid. I’m glad I did it that way. It would be a nightmare to try to make a separate lid fit.

Nice work Mike!! And good choice of wood to go with it.
-
I love the clasp on the front, that's very cool!
-
Mike your box turned out really well. I like the hinges that you used and looks much better than my old plywood box.
-
Thanks. The clasp and hinges came from flee bay. They are both solid brass antiques. The clasp is made for some sort of cabinet. It’s meant to be turned sideways but works great the way it is. I finished the tray tonight but didn’t get any pictures yet. I’d like to attach a leather strap to the handles to make it more convenient to carry. Hopefully I get to leather work next week.
-
You’ve done a beat up job again, Mike. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Bob
-
GREAT job, Mike. NOT BEAT UP. Just saw that!
Bob

Thanks Bob. Here it is in action. I really like the thing.

Looks super Mike. I know you are proud of that work! God Bless, Marc
-
Thanks Marc. It was just like everything else. You put a plan together and it’s about ten times as much work as you had originally thought and takes about ten times the amount of time to complete. When the projects are completed, the satisfaction you get is a nice return.
-
Wow, nice rig and rifle!!
-
That is one fine looking project.
-
Well done.
Nice dovetails.
